Pattern explanation: Increased stiches

I am starting a sweater and I am confused with the stich increase. As you will read the instructions below, I start with 100 sts. If i am correct, after few W&T (and before the increase starts), I still end up with 100 stiches.

The increase says k5, m1. The instructions mention that I should end up with 144 stiches.

I don’t understand how I can end up with 144 stiches starting from 100. Do I need to get to 144 stiches on the first pattern row? Or do i need to do k5, m1 until finishing row 8?

Here below the full instructions:

YOKE

Using needles cast on 100 sts and join in the round. Knit 14 rounds, fold over the neckline lengthways and knit one further round picking up through both loops of the cast on row, knitting them together.

Short row shaping:

Row 1 (RS): knit 30 sts, W&T

Row 2 (WS): p to BoR m, sm, p 30 sts, W&T

Row 3: k to BoR m, sm, k until 5 sts before previous wrapped st, W&T

Row 4: p to BoR m, sm, p until 5 sts before previous wrapped st, W&T

Repeat rows 3 and 4 once more

Row 7 (RS): k to BoR m, sm

K next round, as you come to previously wrapped sts, pick up the wrap with the tip of the right

needle, place the wrap on the left needle creating an extra st, knit the wrap and the st it is

around together through the back loop.

Increase:

*k5, m1*

144 sts

Complete Pattern 1 to row 8

What is the name of your pattern and designer?
You’re correct that you’ll have 100sts after the short rows. An increase round of (k5,m1) will increase by 20sts for a total of 120 which would work with 5 repeats of the 24 stitch chart.
If you had 144sts that would work for 6 repeats of the chart. It’s not clear to me either how you get to 144 however unless it’s two rounds of (k5,m1) to make 144sts.
Knowing the pattern name and designer will help.

Thanks for your answer! The design is called Autumn Jumper. Design: Tracey Driver | Hobbii Design.

I think you are right, I might need to do 2 rows of k5 m1 increase in order to end up with 144 stiches. You are a savior!

Very good looking! Let us know how it’s going.
