P3Tog to Make a Knot?

trying out the ‘simple little something bracelet’ for my aunt…

it says to “Make Knot: P3TOG leaving sts on needle, yarn around needle, then purl the same 3 sts together again.”

huh-wha? it’s the direction for 6 rows, 3 times in each of them, so 18 of them total, so i guess i should learn how… but when i do this, i somehow end up with only 2 stitches on the right needle, so while i started with 16, i end with 11 total… 5 groups of 2, plus the last purl stitch. but if i keep doing that, i’m going to quickly run out of stitches before i can do 31 more rows of instructions. purling is already like quantum physics for me, so what am i doing wrong here?

by the way, the irony is not lost on me… ‘simple’ my @$$…

or wait… am i supposed to do the p3tog, pull the new wrap through onto my right needle, and then take those same 3 stitches and transfer them purl-wise from left to right? then i’d end up with 4 stitches total? then the 16 original stitches would be the skinny end and i’d be making the whole bracelet wider as i worked to the end, which it shows it being all angled in the picture…

What you need to do is P3Tog but don’t slip the ‘old’ stitches off the left needle. With the ‘old’ stitches on the left needle and the ‘new’ stitch on the right needle take the yarn round the right needle by taking it away from you and then bring it back under the needle towards you, then purl the same 3 ‘old’ stitiches and then slip them off the left needle.

I think the cuff looks wider at one end because of the buttons and not any shaping that takes place.

I like the way the pattern writer says “Take that small, tiny ball of yarn that fits into the palm of your hand outta the bottom of that stash bag and cast on. Literally, all it takes is approximatley 36 oz of yarn!” She must have one hell of a pair of hands!

ooohhhh ok. i definitely would not have thought to do that without help. and it wasn’t in the instructions (again, with the sloppy/incomplete, the bane of my knitting existence)… past my bedtime here. will try in the morning and report back. thanks much!

That darn decimal point has wandered off again!

36 oz. … Decimal points, yeah, they are slippery little buggers. :teehee:

Maybe I’m seeing something in the instructions that you aren’t, maybe a bit of experience makes the difference, but I don’t see any problem with the way it’s worded. Julie elaborated a bit more than the pattern but it does tell you exactly what to do. P3TOG leaving sts on needle, followed by yarn around needle, and finally you are to then purl the same 3 sts together again." Frustrating when you encounter it for the first time? Yes. Sloppy/incomplete? I don’t think so.

and… that was my breaking point. so, scratch this project off the list and find another… thanks to all for the attempts at help.
