Oversized Chunky Knit Sweater by Louise Bollanos

Has anyone made this sweater who can offer a bit of assistance to a Beginner knitter? I understand how to do different stitches, but lack experience in always deciphering what the instructions is saying. I believe the instructions assume I already know steps not mentioned that should be performed before completing the last instruction given. But Beginners don’t know these things and need guidance at each interval. Please help if you can. Thanks so much.

Hello

There is lots of help here.

When asking for help you can quote a line or two from the part of the pattern you are stuck on but don’t post more of the pattern than this because of designer copyright. Just enough to get the help you need. Learning to read patterns is all part of the process and the more you do the easier it will get.

Ask away.

No one has ever responded to my inquiry. Am I submitting my question correctly? As a newbie, I would really appreciate a little guidance. Much thanks.

It looks like Creations replied and asked for you to quote a line or two from the pattern. We can see the pattern and are ready to help but we need to know where you are in the instructions. Even if we haven’t made this particular sweater, I’m betting we can help you out.
Which size are you making? Have you started with the back?

Thanks so much salmonmac for responding so quickly. I am knitting size 2XL. I am following the Irish Moss stitch as provided in the pattern.

  • Row 1 (RS): *P1, K1 – Rep from * to the end of the row.
  • Row 2 (WS): *P1, K1 – Rep from * to the end of the row.
  • Row 1 (RS): *K1, P1 – Rep from * to the end of the row.
  • Row 2 (WS): *K1, P1 – Rep from * to the end of the row.

Cont to work in the Irish moss stitch pattern, repeating rows 1-4 until the piece measures 15 (15.5, 16, 16.5, 17, 17.5) inches from the CO edge, ending with a WS row.

I had nearly completed the first piece which is the “Back”. But got confused with the instructions I’m listing below.

Shape Raglan

Still working in the Irish moss st patt and making new patts when sts are decreased.

  • Row 1 (RS): Cast off 2 (2, 2, 4, 4, 4) sts at beg of the row, work in patt to the end of the row.
  • Row 2 (WS): Cast off 2 (2, 2, 4, 4, 4) sts at beg of the row, work in part to the end of the row. 32 (34, 36, 36, 38, 40)sts.

Then dec 1 st at each end of every foll 3rd row until 28 (30, 32, 32, 34, 36) sts.

What is the 3rd row? Do they mean Row 1 (RS) P1, K1……, Row 2 (WS) P1, K1,………….Row 3 (RS) K1, P1…………(dec 1 sts), and Row 4 (WS) K1, P1. Then repeat the 4-step Irish Moss Stitch pattern until I have 38 stitches remaining.

I sincerely appreciate any help you can provide. Because at 79 years old I am teaching myself to knit, it’s easy for me to become confused. Thank you salmonmac.

Repeat the 4 rows of the moss stitch. Every following 3rd row means that you call the next row, row 1. Decrease on rows 3, 6, 9 and 12. That will take you from 46sts to 38sts (decrease at each end, once at the beginning of row and once at end).

It will be easier to keep track of these rows if you write down a column of the moss repeat 1-4 in one column and the rows above in a second column then check off the rows as you work them.

Wonderful to learn knitting and you’re doing very well with this pattern. It’s not clearly written at this decrease instruction so it’s not surprising that it is confusing. Come back and ask if this isn’t clear or if any other questions come up along the way.

Oh thank you so much salmonmac! Row 4 of the Moss Stitch becoming Row 1 for sake of counting every third row of knitting did cross my mind. Thanks for the advice to create a column along side the 4-step Moss pattern, labeling every third row of knitting, a decrease row , and the following row begins the row counting again at 1. Okay, that’s sounds workable. So here we go. Will keep you advised of my progress. Many thanks salmonmac for the encouragement to pursue my dream.
