I’d be so grateful if anyone could help me with this! I am very confused as what to do next on this baby jumper!
These are the buttonband and buttonhole band for the back opening of the sweater.
For the Overlay or buttonhole band, pick up 4 or 6 sts along the edge of the neckband ribbing. Continue picking up the given number of sts for your size along the back opening. Then follow the directions for the ribbing with cast off and cast ons for the buttonholes.
For the Underlay you’ll start at the bottom of the opening, pick up sts and end by picking up 4 or 6 sts at the rigging. Then just follow the rib pattern, no buttonholes to do on this band.
The two bands will overlap in the finished sweater (which looks darling).
Thank you! That actually makes so much sense!! Sometimes I just find the patterns so confusing…
They certainly can be confusing but the more you do, the easier it gets. Have fun finishing up!
Hello again.
I’m knitting Sirdar Snuggly DK 4946 dress cardigan and hat.I have got to the part of making up the underlay and overlay on the dress and I’m stuck. I don’t understand what to do. Please see my photos. I hope you can help.
Thank you.
See if the reply to the original poster helps:

If this isn’t helpful, come back and I’ll see if I can draw it.
Thank you for your help. I have knitted the overlays and attached them. One with buttonholes. The instructions ‘sew side edges…at back neck opening…’ is what I don’t understand. What are the side edges and the cast off stitches, are these the three cast off stitches at the back? Sorry and thank you again.
Yes, if the opening is a U-shape, the cast off sts are at the bottom of the U. The idea is to stitch them down in order to attach them to the sweater and set the overlap.
Thank you, I think I get it now. So I need to stitch the underlay side edge down to the three cast off stitches at the U and then stitch the overlay over the top to secure?
Exactly.
Thank you
