OT - White tea

Does anyone here drink white tea? I had some on vacation and it was sooo good! I’ve done some research and apparently it’s at least as good for you as green tea, but I liked the flavor better. There are several different kinds though so I thought I’d see if anyone knows anything about it or what kind you might drink. Thanks!

That reminds me I have some white tea and should start drinking it again. I found it to be similar to green tea but a little milder. The brand I found was Planet Organic which is from Australia so I don’t know if you get it where you are. I’ve been drinking more coffee and black tea lately but think it’s time to go back to the fruit, herbal and white and green teas for a change. It is Summer here and very humid so I should probably ease up on the caffine for a bit.
Regards.

i’ve never tried it, but i  all kinds of tea!

i’m going to check it out.

I have had a white tea (japanese) which is sooo smooth and yummy, but it’s hidiously expensive, i’ve seen it over $30 aud for only 100g - yes, that’s $300 a kilo! It is supposed to be really heathy, full of anti-oxidants etc, but unless you really don’t like green tea, there’s not much difference really (i’m sure purists would argue that but…) defineitly milder in taste IMHO. BUT, if you get really good quality green tea that’s picked really young etc it tastes really good so that’s what i like - i actually drink a kind called budda’s tears and its a jasmine green tea, hand rolled into these little balls which unfurl in the cup. really lovely tea.

I don’t have a lot of useful information about the tea to provide–but I do drink it and you are correct that it has tons of health benefits… It is also sort of the cadillac of teas–very very smooth.

I’ve never, ever heard of this. Definitely will have to check it out. We have a store that carries all sorts of hard-to-find things, they might have it.

I drink lots of tea and have always been a tea lover! Celestial Seasonings has several white teas- I bought them at both Super Walmart and Super Target. I usually brew a big pitcher and add a bag of the white tea in with my green tea. I bought one of the peach favored white teas and when I tried it as a hot tea- I thought it tasted a little like…dirt  . So for now, I will just keep adding it to my green tea for the added health benefits- if there are really any- until I find a white tea that tastes a little better. I haven’t tried the reg white tea by itself though, I guess I should!

I never liked Celestial Seasonings, but that is just my opinion. We drink Numi teas around here and they have an orange spice white tea that is delicious. I really like green tea, but it does greatly depend on the brand/quality-I’ve tasted TERRIBLE green tea. Unfortunately I can’t handle the caffeine in green tea so I am stuck with other things. Right now I am drinking Morrocan Mint with some honey in it. Mmmmmm. I also drink a lot of the medicinal teas, I’m kind of bummed I’m not pregnant since the pregnancy tea is my all time favorite! I guess I could drink it anyway but somehow it just feels wrong, yk? Oh and Good Earth has a great tea that is spicy, has a great cinnamon smell.

White tea is really good–very smooth. I do drink it plain occasionally for health reasons, but unfortunately, I prefer to drink my tea with cream and sugar, which means that I kind of miss out on subtle teas like white because the cream and sugar overpower them. Making them stronger (i.e., two bags instead of one) helps.

My all-time favorite tea is Earl Gray–the touch of bergamot is just yummy!

Ang, you drink “baby tea”! That’s what my MIL calls it - my DH drinks his that way too. I prefer my tea “black” - add a little honey when my throat’s dry and scratchy. Earl Gray is my favorite too!! It’s makes an excellent iced tea as well.

Julie- maybe I will try a different brand of white tea then- if I can find it that is. Thanks for the opinion on CS. I am not very picky about tea and I like a lot of the flavored teas that Celestial Seasonings has, so I just took for granted that tea was tea was tea- if you know what I mean.

I take my tea “black”, too. Isn’t it more common for people in the south to sweeten their tea? I used to work at a restaurant and whenever the southern custom cutters would come through during the summer- they would order tea and then be upset that it wasn’t sweet tea because it wasn’t the same when you just add sugar.

kittiminx,

That Japanese white tea looks delicious. I’ve heard of it before, but never seen it. Where are you getting it? Your local health food store? A tea house? I’m going to try and find some today. Thanks for the Idea.

Fiber girl,

I enjoy Earl Grey as well, but that doesn’t stop me from enjoying Green, White, Oolong or herbal teas. Relax, I think maybe you are drinking too much Earl Grey.

P.S. I think peppermint tea with a little honey is best for a scratchy throat. Try it, you might like it.

I enjoy white tea when I’m “having tea out”, but it really is impractical for me at home, where I tend towards green tea.

The expense of it to begin with, and the lengths one must go to keep it fresh and not pick up any other odd flavors (which can happen), makes it not a good choice for me for home use.

I like the Numi teas too, Arugula - and I discovered that their Smoky Tarry, if brewed strong and added to one’s rice cooker, yields nearly the same effect as steaming rice in tea leaves, as you would find at your favorite Dim Sum palace. Soooo very flavorful. I love cooking rice with different teas.

Can’t you just keep it in a glass jar? What other lengths must one go to? :??

If it’s so difficult, what makes you so sure they keep it fresh enough at the tea house?

 If you can’t afford to drink it at home, how can you afford to drink it when you are “having tea out”? I assume it would be probably at least twice as expensive to purchase by the cup than in bulk.

Is there something i’m missing here?

“Baby tea”? :roflhard:

I had an English friend when young, and her mother gave me my first cup of hot tea, and she made it with cream and sugar. I’ve prepared it that way ever since. It’s like a dessert in and of itself! I’ve never tried Earl Gray iced, but I’ll bet it’s delicious. I also like chamomile; add some sugar, and it tastes like Juicy Fruit!

Wow thanks for all the responses!

My friend that served it to me finally responded and the one she gave me was Uncle Lee’s Tea. I have seen expensive ones in my search, but this one doesn’t look bad at all. She said she got it at her local health food store or grocery… she lives in Calgary. I’m going to look for it here and if I can’t find it I might order some. I’ve never been a tea drinker, but I liked it THAT much!

kemp recommended adagio teas on a thread a while back, http://www.adagio.com and i ordered several white teas from there, all resonably priced. the white blueberry is to DIE for.

Thanks for the info bfp!

MrTea

I get my tea from a japanese tea house called the Ay Teahouse, i don’t know if they’re in the US tho. mostly tho i think you can get good tea if they let you taste it first - then just go with what you like the taste of.

I  white tea.
I  green tea.
I  red (Rooibos) tea, too!
All of them have antioxidant properties as well.

(The only teas I don’t like are the fruity ones.)
