OT - Whatcha Growing?

Wow…

I wish I’d taken more pics of our wildflower garden. We got the seed from Wildseed Farms (http://www.wildseedfarms.com/), and it’s the easiest thing in the world. Wildflowers do better the more you ignore them. We tilled up a plot of land (about 4’X10’), sprinkled the seeds, and watered, and voila! Gorgeous flowers for most of the spring and about half of the summer!

Oooh, fun thread, didn’t see this before! :cheering: Yay Gardens!!

LOVE all the pics. What roses! Knit-errant, I love the red-peachy one!

DeAnzaJig, that looks like a great garden plot for a 2nd-year gardener, wow! Any update pics?

Knitqueen, love your pics! I haven’t grown fuschia in years because they are soooo sensitive to getting dried out, and it’s so hard to keep a pot watered enough. SOOOOO pretty though, glad yours survived your vacation!

Denise, this is a late reply to your Q… I don’t know what your last frost date is down there–basically you would look at how many days something takes to mature, and make sure you’ve got enough time before frost. Don’t try anything that’s too heat loving at this point, but I’m sure you could at least plant spinach seeds still. And peas. Those things thrive as it cools off. Peas like fertile soil, so buy a bag of compost for the barrel. “Bush” type peas would grow fast, do well in a barrel, and don’t need support! Also, there’s a green called Mache, which is extremely cold-hardy, which will still be growing after your first frost.

I planted wildflower seeds on Memorial Day. the ones by the front door are going nuts. the ones in the back yard are so-so. only some of them took (the orange poppies).
however, we inherited (more like “bought”) a ton of stuff that was already at the house upon move-in. sod was laid in January and has for the most part taken very well to make a back lawn. there’s an apricot tree shading most of that lawn, and 2 apple trees, small citrus tree (small tree with small citrus type fruit on it), and a lime tree also growing in that lawn. also back there are a couple of miniature rose bushes and some giant heart shaped leaf bulby things.
the front has some very long established rose bushes in a planter along the garage wall, with a reasonably sized front lawn.

:muah: i’m jealous of everyones gardens and plants. i didn’t get to plant much this year or last year due to being prenant. and i tend to neglet my plants. i was just admiring my sisters garden yesterday!!! lovely garden and plants ladies… can’t wait for next SPRING!!! :woohoo: i have some pansies but the didn’t do as well as i had hoped. and then there was a dove nested in one of my hanging pots… just noticed yesterday she had some babies…but she killed my plant cause i can’t water it!! :biting:

oooh–knitqueen–your pics are GORGEOUS! :inlove:

I’ve LOVED sunflowers for as long as I can remember…since I was a little kid. And how come my fuschia hanging baskets don’t look like that?!? I’ve kept them watered! The leaves look great, but there are barely any blooms.

Better luck next year, I suppose. This was my first full summer in my (and DH’s) first house! So this year was really just “practice!” :teehee:

My fuschia is hanging in a spot right against the house where it get sun until about 11am and then is in shade for the rest of the day. Maybe that makes a difference? Believe me, I’m no plant expert but I’m finally not afraid to try different things!

Hmmm, mine gets afternoon sun…maybe it gets too hot? Ours almost DIED on us when we went away for Memorial Day. Luckily they did come back over the rest of the summer.

wow!! beautiful!!! all of em!! especially those pink roses
Well as for me I was growing beans…yes those kidney beans… But I got tired of waiting for them…it takes about 3 months for new beans to develop…and it was kind of a hassle for me to water them everyday…so i forgot a couple of days and they died on me :pout: :verysad:

I’ve always been confused by the directions for fuchsias - they say they can take sun, but ours have always done better in mostly shade (bright shade if that makes any sense). We replanted ours into a pot and try to keep it in the shade and it seems happiest there.

I’ve also had some really good luck with tarragon this year of all things. The barrel it was growing in, it had taken over from all the other herbs. Then the barrel finally disintergrated and so I split it up among 3 pots and some in the ground and it’s all growing new shoots. Crazy tarragon.
