OT help picking camera

Need to buy digial camera and all of you seem to have one so I thought I’d ask my fellow knitters about pros and cons of their cameras

I love my Olympus Camedia. It’s the 2nd digital camera I’ve had. Had a Fuji 1st. It was o.k., but I couldn’t get extra memory cards for it several months after the purchase…the notch on the newer memory cards were on the wrong side of the camera. So I would never buy another Fuji.

I’ve had my Olympus for a couple of years so I’m sure they’ve gotten even more sophisticated, but don’t feel compelled to get a newer one. This does what I need it to and it’s easy to use.

I bought a Sony mavica when they first came out and I loved the convenience of it…it used floppy disk and you just popped them out of the camera and into the computer. I now own a newer model and it uses mini disk…love it too. The convenience is great and the pictures are so clear…plus you can make mini movies with sound…I have used it to capture moments in my grandchild (not really but I claim him anyway since I don’t have any of my own yet) life.

There are so many out there you need to just check them all out.

I’m on my 4th digital camera having moved up to a Canon DSLR now. You didn’t say what type of camera you are looking for (size, $$, what you plan to use it for) because all that makes a difference.

Off the top of my head w/o knowing any of this I’d say stick to Canon, Nikon, and Olympus. I don’t know much about Fuji and nothing really wrong with Sony, but I wouldn’t have one with the floppy or the mini disk. The floppies don’t hold enough information, meaning fewer pics at a time, fewer megapixels which means smaller prints, and the mini-disks take a long time to write to the disk meaning longer between shots. I also don’t like the “memory sticks” as it’s proprietary and no other camera can use it if you move on to a new camera at some point. I believe they are phasing out “Smart Media” memory cards.

Here’s a few websites that offer reviews and you can compare cameras. These are the ones I go to when doing camera research.

TMI?

I just bought a Kodak EasyShare and I love it. I had a Canon but didn’t like the zoom on it. I have boys in sports and I couldn’t zoom close enough. The Kodak as 10X Optical Zoom which is more like mySLR camera. The price was right also. Attached is some pictures of my pink tulips.

If this is your first digital camera I recomend the Kodak easy share they are very user friendly and the quality of the photos is the same if not better than my much more expensive and much more complicated camera I have now (my husband went for a swim I think with my kodak in his pocket  )

Isn’t technology wonderful?! Almost any brand digital camera gives great photos. Who EVER woulda thunk!

I knew I’d find people who were dissatified with their cameras so I knew I could trust my knitting people for honest answers  I also knew I’d find out what people love about their cameras  Just knew I could trust these answers more then any other place I went  I’d appreicate any more input you could give me.I was leaning toward the EasyShare before I asked the forum.

Kelly recommended the Easy Share to me. I got it from Overstock.com for what I felt was a good price, and I’m very happy with it.

I know that transfereing my pictures from my easy share to my computer was much easier than the camera I have now as well.

I love my Kodak Easy Share camera… I have had it for prolly 2yrs now… I love that I can hook it up to my computer or just hook it up to the easy dock and print photos that way… I usually do this when I go home to WV… I got it when they had a deal going I got the camera, all software, easy dock, paper, and everything else I needed for it… :happydance:

Yes, I’d forgotten about Kodak. They are good, too.

I love, love love my Canon Powershot. It’s been going strong for 6 years, no problems whatsoever. Around Christmas I got some money to blow and I did consider replacing it with a newer Powershot because the newer ones take li’l videos…but I decided against it because I couldn’t justify the expense. It really is a little workhorse, and it doesn everything I need it to. Did I mention that I love my camera?

I’ve bought 6 other Powershots for work and they have all been great too – whatever you decide on, just make sure you get optical zoom and digital zoom, not just digital zoom. IMHO.

How long is the battrey life on digital cameras?

I use rechargeable batteries in mine. Not real sure how long each charge lasts since I don’t use the camera as often as some others do. They seem to last thru several shooting sessions. I make sure to recharge them if something important is coming up in the near future.

I’ve been after several people in here who shall not be named to get rechargeables! :roflhard: Two sets of rechargeables and you won’t have problems not having batteries available. They may cost a little more, but they pay for themselves quickly. Regular batteries don’t last too long usually. I’ve bought the rechargeables at Radio Shack and they are fine.

I also HIGHLY recommend getting a card reader. It seems that is another problem in here…people losing the cable to connect the camera to the computer. Besides when you connect like that it uses up the battery even more. Mine is a Sandisk 12 in 1, but there are other readers out there that will work as well.

BTW…some cameras come with a proprietary rechargeables so check before you buy anything. Oh and two of my daughers have the Canon Powershots and love them, too.

Please need more good and bad about cameras you use

I had absolutely no experience with digitals before I got my Kodak. I’ve always loved, and generally prefer, my Nikon SLR. However, I found the Kodak easy to use, and the softwear that comes with it is easy to use, too. You can also share photos on the Kodak site, so people are not coming you your computer to look at them. I like that.

I have kodak easy share as well, and with my 512 MB card, I can hold over 700 pictures which are above average resolution on it. I wish I had a Canon RebelXT, but alas that’s a long shot and is very expensive to me. I’d say if you just need to take pictures of projects, or want decent pictures of family and whatnot, go ahead and get a kodak easy share.

If u want to be a pro, get a SLR camera.

This is the best little digital camera on the market right now…

Sony DSC-N1

I bought 7 of these for our top sales accociates this year and one for my mom. They were a huge hit at the anual sales meeting, everyone loves them. Super easy to use (my mom uses her’s avidly, that’s saying alot), most functions are accessed through the touch screen. Great auto-focus but, you can also set everything manually. The size is perfect. Small enough to go with you anywhere and yet not too small, so it’s not awkward to use. Not to mention a whopping 8.1 mega pixels, 3x optical zoom and huge LCD screen. Too cool to really explain how cool it is. You want this camera, trust me.

P.S. Don’t forget to order a 1GB memory stick DUO for it. You’ll want it especially if you take 8mp photos and it’s not much more expensive than the 512mb.
