Hello! I’m hoping that somebody from the Hartford area can help me out. We live in Maine and our planning a road trip to Williamsburg at the end of the month. We are trying to plan our travel through Hartford so that we are trying to go through at a super bad time, yet we’d like to get an early start. What times are considered rush hour? We are hoping to leave our house around 3:00am and if I remember correctly, Hartford is about 4 1/2 hours from us. I’m thinking if we stop for breakfast just outside of Hartford we can wait it out and it’ll be just about right.
The Hartford rush hour centers around the insurance companies which start at 8am. So their rush hour usually goes from about 7:30 to about 9. Even at its peak its usually not too bad. However, you really have to watch I95 and the Merritt Pkwy (Rte 15). They have much more intense rush hours that cause greater delays. If I know what route you are going I can help you more.
I agree with Jeremy, I-95 is much worse than I-91. Be prepared for delays, in the summertime there’s always tons of traffic on 95 throughout the day and especially on Fridays.
Williamsburg, VA? 84 is a better way to cross CT. I’ve never driven through Hartford that early, so I’m not sure how bad it will be, but there is often construction along parts of 84 that might cause a few delays.
I 84 will not pose major delays usually. However, if there are delays, a very good alternate route is to take I91 south to I 691 west.I 691 west leads you right back into I-84. It actually takes about the same as travelling direct on I 84.
