OT - Damn you Sarah Jessica Parker!

I just turned 59 (must be the eldest hag on the site), and have been blond for about 10 years. I’m ready to let it go “natural” but I’d have to shave my head to get rid of the root/growth problem. I have short hair and last summer seriously contemplated doing the Kojak thing. Hm-m-m.

:roflhard: Just use a temporary color till it grows out. Then when it reaches the point where you don’t mind cutting it you can cut off the rest. Worth a try anyway.

that’s what i did when i decided i was tired of coloring my hair every 3 weeks…i swear it grows like a weed! i colored it sorta-semi close to my natural hair color (or what i remembered it to be! ) and let it grow…and grow…and grow.

it took quite some time for it to grow and cut itself out. i was within one haircut of having it gone when i was talking to the girl who does my hair and said if it didn’t happen by the next time i was coloring again! she was mortified…lol “YOU HAVE COME SO FAR!!! DON’T DO IT!”

so i didn’t…it grew out and ya know what i found out? my hair is darker now than it use to be and i don’t like it! :rofling: within…2-3 weeks it was getting chunky highlights added!

 and ya know, in this semi-natural color stage…about oooh…a few months ago…i found my first gray hair! :wall:

i take heart in hearing my friends all tell me to shut up cuz they found theirs years ago! :rofling:

Wow, I don’t feel so “old” here now. I thought everyone here (but me) was mid-30’s and down. At 50 (in February), my hair has alot of grey. I actually have more grey than my 71 year old mother; but then she raised me  , and I raised my daughter! :roflhard:

I do periodically color mine. I prefer me as a dark brunette (natural color), but when I let myself go grey, I get so many compliments on how pretty it is, and I guess it really is a pretty color. I just don’t like looking this old.

You know, when I said my husband thought I reminded him of his mother ( ), I think he did say it as nicely as he could…he wasn’t being mean and nasty. However, since then, he has said if I ever asked him again, he wouldn’t be able to say that since she doesn’t have hair as a cancer/chemo patient!!! What a charmer he is. We have been spending quite a bit of time w/her lately. She always wears some sort of hat, so you don’t really see if she does or does not have hair…well, she has hair! About and inch long and really dark brown and maybe a couple dozen gray hairs and that’s it! Except for being bald on top, I was amazed that it came back like this, although I have heard that it can.

I have been thinking about why I started to dye my hair in the first place, and it was when we got custody of our grandson. I was in my early 40’s and didn’t want to look like the grandma of the class, even though I was…there were many mothers older than I was. That started the evil cycle and Loreal 5G and I will be the best of friends till I probably die.

pat.

Men just don’t get it sometimes. I was mowing the other day, and the dh was outside, too, weed-eating. Well, we took a break and he says, “wow, in the sunlight it’s obvious you have a lot of gray hair!”

My dad was completely gray by his late 30s, and when I started getting grays in my mid 20s I figured “uh oh!” But they’re not as bad for me at 40 as they were for him, thankfully!

Re your MIL’s hair & chemo: it can grow back without the gray? That’s amazing! I’ve heard stories of people getting their hair cut really short and then having it grow back out much darker or curlier than before. One of my friends at work used to get perms 3 or 4 times a year (her hair is thin and fine). Well, she was broke for awhile and didn’t do the perm thing, and guess what? Her hair is now naturally curly–it wasn’t before!

My ex hubby would KILL for grey hair. Literally. He was balding by the time he was 24. And poor #1 son - I can see it happening already with him at age 18!!!

Since its tax season and I worked 12 hours yesterday (and then came home and placed my knitpicks order and fixed my sweater bind off fubar), I did the ponytail in a hair thing this AM. I had to do some serious floofing and spraying to get those roots to not stick out! I am ready for those low-lights to make this 2 inch set of roots go away!

And…about the whole make up thing. There are people who have the gift of applying it to their face and having it stay there. I have never been one of those people. Plus I have rosacea (aka adult acne) and alot of stuff makes me break out. So I use some CoverGirl powder makeup (not because its cheap but because it works best for my skin), eyeliner pencil, mascara, and if I am lucky, lipstick. We have a new gal at work who sell MK on the side…I have picked up a few goodies from here but I doubt I will ever be able to master liquid makeup.

Men just don’t know how good they have it–not to have to think about coloring their hair–because “gray looks great on a man”, not having to wear a bra–(for the obvious reasons, RUPAUL!), make-up, because whether they have eyebrows or not, they’re gonna live with what they’ve got, whether their big toenail polish is chipped, when they last thought to manicure their fingernails–something I’m well-known for doing (forgetting it til I’m up in the choir on Sunday mornings and I look at the lady next to me --with wonderfully groomed hands)!)…etc., etc, etc! And MOST men never even had to TRY wearing high heels for a day!! And I have NOT done that in over 15 or 20 years (guess I “peaked” early, uh"!! )

Tip for applying liquid makeup from one who is also makeup-challenged: use a wet sponge, either a sea sponge or one of those triangular make-up sponges. Dab a bit of the liquid makeup on the sponge (or your face, one area at a time) and blend it in. It keeps you from applying too much, and the water in the sponge makes the application smoother. I learned that from my 70-year-old MALE dermatologist, of all people!

Angelia,
Yes, your hair can come in different after you’ve lost it due to chemo. We met a girl at the oncologist one day, who I would guess was around 20 years old, and she had the curliest hair ever! She told me that it had always been straight as could be until she had a stem cell transplant from her brother who had curly hair…and now hers was too!

pat.

The stem cell transplant makes sense of it all! Wow!
