I’ve been knitting for a while, but it seems when I stitch a stockinette there is always one side of the “v” tighter than the other. It curls the yarn around funny, and it looks like I have lines running down my piece. I notice I tend to pull my purl stitches tight, so I tried using a bigger needle in my right hand, but it didn’t seem to change anything. Any ideas? I’m a “picker,” I take my yarn from the left hand (continental), and gauge/yarn doesn’t seem to matter. The working end of my piece, where the needles are, is at the top of the pictures. Any ideas?
I think it’s the yarn, your sts don’t seem to be twisted. But check the purl video to see if when you ‘pick’ the yarn for them, you’re not wrapping backwards.
Check with another yarn and see if you get the same thing.

I’ve used several different types of yarn with the same result. At first I thought it might be because the yarn has three plies (is plied? has plies?), but I used a single-ply yarn and the same thing happens.
Single plies can be even worse. Some multi ply yarns will do this too. See this knitty article.
I have noticed this in my work to some degree as well! I’m not sure what causes it exactly (I know I’m doing everything correctly), but the other posters are right that certain yarns seem to make it more obvious than others.
Sorry I don’t really have a solution to offer … Just thought I’d let you know that you weren’t the only one with this issue!
Thanks everyone for your replies. I especially like suzeeq’s knitty article, which explains how different plies act, shows EXACTLY what I’ve been trying to figure out. I’m still not happy with the way it looks, but at least I know I’m not alone (thanks kmaclean)! I think I’ll try to find some yarns that knit well for me and stick with them.
If you use a different stich pattern it won’t show; stockinette will bias the worst, but a cable pattern is fine, or something textured like seed or moss stitch, probably broken rib as well.
