I just bought the Boye interchangeable needles. I am making a baby blanket that calls for 31 inch circular needles. How is that measured? Is it tip to tip or just the cable length? I am having difficulty coming up with that length. Sorry about the moronic question but none of my books answer my question. TIA
? on measuring circular needles
It’s tip to tip. Your needles don’t have to be exactly 31 inches.
If it’s knit in the round, and I’m not sure how you’d do a baby blanket that way, you can use a smaller needle as long as the stitches fit.
Same with if you knit flat–actually, the longer the better, but as long as the stitches fit and the cord is long enough not to want to sproing back, you’re ok.
I believe it is tip to tip, but for a blanket that you’ll be doing flat the exact size isn’t that critical, just whatever is comfortable and doesn’t stretch out or squish the stitches too much.
I have asked this question too, and I believe the answer was tip to tip.
Thanks so much for your quick replies…so I am assuming that since I am knitting flat, that I just go back and forth so as not to make a tube. My next question would be: If I am to make a stockinette stitch I still have to purl that second row since I am not knitting in the round is that correct?
Yes. Do everything as if the needles are not attached. It’s just like using two needles.
