So I am somewhat new to knitting and decided to make a poncho for my niece so I am chose an easy pattern from Bernat. Here are the directions so you know what I am doing:
INSTRUCTIONS
The instructions are written for smallest size. If changes are necessary for larger sizes the instructions will be written thus ( ).
Make 2 pieces alike.
Cast on 65 (73-85-97) sts.
1st row: (WS). K1. *P1. K1. Rep from * to end of row.
Rep last row of seed st pat twice more.
Next row: (RS). K2. K2tog. Knit to last 4 sts. Sl1. K1. psso. K2.
Beg with a purl row, work 3 rows in stocking st.
Rep last 4 rows 10 times more. 43 (51-63-75) sts.
Next row: (RS). K2. K2tog. Knit to last 4 sts. Sl1. K1. psso. K2.
Next row: Purl.
Rep last 2 rows 5 (9-14-19) times more. 31 (31-33-35) sts. Cast off knitwise.
FINISHING: Sew center Front and center Back seams
I am using the middle size starting with CO 85. Now here is my problem. I made both pieces according to the pattern, one edge with the k2. K2tog. and the other edge with the Sl1. K1. psso. K2. patten. Now I assumed that when sewing the seams I would sew the identical edges together. in other words Sl1. K1. psso. K2. edges together and K2. K2tog edges together BUT they don’t fit.
Should I have reversed the pattern for it to work? Did I assume wrong? What do I do? Can some one help me please?

Do you have 2 almost triangle pieces but with the top point cut off? Those 2 short sides form the neck, and each piece goes over one shoulder with the bottom points being the center front and back.
Does this work?
Yep I have to two half triangles and the diagram does help.Thank you. So it is ok to sew the Sl1. K1. psso. K2. edge to the K2. K2tog edge even though they look different?
When I say don’t fit I miss spoke. What I meant to say is, is it ok to seam the sl1. k1. psso. k2 edge and the k2. k2tog. edge together, even though they look different? I assumed that the identical edges would be sewn together…
I merged your two posts since they were identical so all the replies are together.
There really is only one way to seam them with the two wrong sides together. If you do it any other way you’d have one side inside out. So yes, seam those two sides together, wrong sides together.
Wonderful! Thank you both. I guess it just seemed wierd to me. And thanks for mergeing, I couldn’t figure out how to merge them and don’t quite know how 2 posts got up there to begin with. Thanks for the help!:woohoo:
A sl k psso dec is done at the beg of a row on the R edge, the k2tog at the end on the L edge. If you sew the edges so the decs were together, one piece would be upside down.
