Long time no WIP from me! But now I’m making a baby blanket for my friend’s little arrival next month - don’t know what it’s going to be, so I’ve opted for a nice gender-neutral green colour - although perhaps the butterflies are a smidge feminine :eyebrow:
The pattern’s made up of 3 motifs from the Knitting on the Edge book (Nicky Epstein) kind of mushed together - and it’s being knit in RYC Cashsoft 4ply, colour Spring (don’t ask me why on earth I’m knitting a blanket in 4ply… trust me I’ve learnt me lesson! :wall:)
Anyways, I was after a bit of advice, purrrlease - I’d like to pick up and knit a nice border around the edge when it’s done - I have a nice contrasting cream colour (you might be able to see it in the bottom piccie) - but I’m looking for stitch pattern ideas - anyone? Also, would you block the blanket before adding the border? Or just block it all at the same time - the “columns” in the pattern give it quite a lot of sideways stretch so I though blocking before might be useful - what do you think?
Thanks for looking & thanks in advance for any advice! Sorry for waffling away here :yadda: - perhaps I should post this in Patterns to see if anyone has extra ideas there…
I think it’s beautiful, never blocked anything before so I dont know how to answer your question. If you know how to crochet you could pick up and crochet a pretty border around it.
I think you have a lot of work to do before the arrival, but it sure will be beautiful when done-be sure to post a pic of the fo!
That is absolutely gorgeous! I think I’d block it before adding a border, just to be safe. I’m not sure what border to add, though–maybe one of the patterns in the blanket?
I would definitely block before you do a border … as for the border itself, I would suggest something sturdy but plain, more pattern in the outside border might look too busy. Just IMO. I the leaves and butterflies combo!
Am defintely going to block before adding the border - I’ve got another 4 or 5 repeats to do on the the main body so I have a bit more time to think about the border pattern.
Another Q actually - would you add the border in one go (i.e. pick up stitches on all four sides) or one side at a time? I guess either way will involve some clever increases at the corners so it lies flat… hmmm more thinking :??
Hehe! Phew! I’ve managed to finish the body of the blankie… 288 rows later and now it’s blocking!!!
The little nipper is due any day so I think I’m going to exhange the idea of a lacy border for a nice ribbon stitched around the edge - thanks for all your advice though - there’s such a lot of pattern in the blanket that I think some ribbon would look more elegant somehow… will post a piccie when it’s done (I’m enlisting the help of my mum’s super sewing skills this weekend…she doesn’t know this yet ;))
Whilst the recipient of this gift is now 5 days late, a friend of a friend had her baby at 28 weeks last week - I thought a little preemie beanie would be in order to keep her head toastie - by all accounts, she’s doing well so fingers crossed everyone Here’s the little hat, modelled by a orange
I TOTALLY LOVE!!! the blanket. It looks incredible and thank you for giving me a visual on how to block. I’m a newbie and didn’t really understand what blocking was so thanks again.
My question to you is how do you add borders? Do you pick up stitches with a stitch holder and than knit them in or is there some other way?
Love your advice
PS>>> Will you be posting the pattern for this blanket on the forum. I would love to have it and try it myself!!!
The little fella arrived last Thursday (2 weeks late!) and he’s a stunner!
… And the blanket’s finished too! My wonderful mum sewed a ribbon on for me (I’m utterly useless) & there’s a wee hat to accompany the blankie too. Here’s some pics:
