I’m knitting Susanne Muller’s Nomad Hood. I have knitted flat on circular needles and reached the point where I am supposed to join for working in the round. What join method do I use to keep the wrong side outside and stay in the pattern stitches?
That hood looks like such a good idea right about now.
If you end having completed a WS row then join, the WS will be on the outside of the circle. So you would be joining the last stitch of the WS row to the first stitch of the WS row.
Does the pattern direct you to knit with WS our or do you prefer to work that way? Just curious.
Thank you for your response. I had just finished a right side row and the instructions for round 1 after the join are for the wrong side. Round 2 is worked by right side instructions. The pattern is half fisherman’s rib and the wrong side is the outside of the hood. Just not sure how to do the join to prevent a gap.
You should be able to continue from the last stitch worked to make the join. It won’t be a firm connection until you’ve worked a few more rows.
As far as the RS/WS goes, there are some helpful comments on the Ravelry page from some of the project knitters.
See:

There’s this from the comments:
"I was fine until I added the three stitches–then once i figured out that the knitting in the round should be on the WS (after several froggings) i finally got myself into pattern again.
“SO ROW 21 in the round, be sure you are knitting on the WRONG SIDE–then the instruction to begin the row with SLIP ONE Yarn Over Knit 1 makes perfect sense and your pattern will continue as it ought.”
See if that helps and let us know. You can also quote some of the directions if you’d like just don’t give us a large portion of the pattern due to designer copyright.
(It seems that this pattern is half-brioche rather than fisherman’s rib. The results look the same but the methods are different so if you’re searching for videos for the stitch in the round, try half brioche.)
I’m still confused. To start knitting in the round with the wrong side out, the working yarn would have to be on the left and I would start knitting the last stitch of the last flat row. Is that right?
At the finish of a WS row the flat piece would look like the diagram on the left. Then if you fold it around, the WS is facing out and the yarn strand is on the right, ready to join and knit in the round. Is this approximately the situation you’re knitting is in?
It looks like it’s on the left in @salmonmac’s drawing, but when you turn the work so the opening faces you, the yarn will be coming from the right.
Does the pattern say to join and then work round 1 the WS instruction or to work the WS and then join in the round?
I’m not surprised you’re confused by this. I even got a piece of knitting out to try to work this out and any which way I look at it, it seems the WS has to be worked flat, then joined when you get to the end of the WS row, joining last stitch to first stitch, WS facing out.
I’ve knit this hood but I think the trickiest part is the start with the working only the first half of the magic cast on and shaping the crown.
When you get to working in the round, you cast on three stitches, and just carry on as you have been for the flat knitting, using the new row 1 and 2. You don’t have to turn the work inside out - that’s just how you wear it at the end.
The join is just a simple work the next stitch in the round, as for any join in the round project. You will be adding a border to the face hole anyway so that will cover the joint.
Here’s a link to my project but I’m not sure if the notes will be of anymore help.
To add to my last comment, the RS / WS discussion is a bit of a red herring I think! I knit mine totally from the right side and then turned it inside out to add the border.
The last row of flat knitting is row 20 which is a RS row. You then cast on three and join in the round.
Row 1 is equivalent to the WS row knit from the RS ( because you’re now in the round).
So flat knit WS row is p1, sl1pw with yo.
In the round WS row is k1, sl1 pw with yo ( which is row 1 after the join.
You will still be alternating RS and WS rows, but just both from the RS.
Hope this is clearer!
Not that I’m making this hood but you have made it clear enough for me to understand. I’ve learned something, thanks.
Thanks, Mel61. My next concern was the change in the row pattern from flat to knitting in the round. You’ve answered it!
