No wrap short heel heel help!

Hello all. I’m attempting my second pair of socks. First was afterthought heel and much easier than the mess I am in now. The pattern is interweave’s cuff to cuff socks with no wrap short row heel on 2 circulars. I’ve just finished the first part by slipping sts and leaving sts unknitted. I have 8 live stitches on needle 2 and shape looks good. Now I’m completely stuck. I saw a link to happy knits blog and she now starts closing the gaps slowly row by row by k2tog and picking up stitches until all sts are live.

My instructions however say:
Next row right side sl 1st st pw, knit to end of needle 2 closing gaps as you come to them.
Next rnd work across needle 1 in pattern and knit to end of needle 2, closing rem gaps as you come to them.

Then it’s onto the top down foot.

Any help much much appreciated!

Welcome to the forum!

Usually you would close the gaps by knitting or purling 2sts together. In order to compensate for the decrease, you would pick up a stitch immediately after the decrease. Sounds like the blog you found. Here’s something similar:

Thanks for helping. I’m just wondering whether I close the gaps all on one round as it seems to say in the pattern. On the video, they close the gaps gradually still working on one needle.

Yes, I would follow the pattern directions for your particular sock pattern. The video gives you an idea of the way to work the k2tog with the pick up of sts. Does your pattern pick up sts as you work the row or does it compensate for decreases in a later row?

It must pick up as the next part is continue to knit tube as before. Thanks for your help. I’m a nervous knitter and need reassurance

You can always put in a lifeline through the current row just in case you need it.

Well, I did k2tog to close gaps, picking up stitches in between all on the same round and it looks messy with gaping holes :frowning:. Only just seen the lifeline video (but thanks. Sure it’ll come in handy in the future). Just going to rip out the heel and start again. Maybe I’ll just follow the video and close gaps row by row on needle 2 before joining round again. can’t help but feel the pattern instructions are rather minimal. Thanks for all the help!
