Newbie: Wrong side, Right Side

I’m a newbie to the forum and to knitting.

I chose a scarf pattern called simple scarf for him. And it does appear to be simple except I’m so confused with wrong side right side instructions. I didn’t learn with wrong side right side so I don’t know how to read the instructions.

There is a pattern chart and I’m supposed to read.

Row 1 from right to left right side odd rows
Row 2 from left to right wrong side even rows

Can someone please enlighten me. Should I be reading wrong side opposite. Meaning if it’s K1 wrong side I should be purling.

I’m really confused about this.

Thank you.

If it’s a scarf, the “right side” is the knit stitch side, and the “wrong side” would be the purl stitch side. Do you have a link to the pattern?

This is the pattern I’m using. I wanted it wider so I cast on 46 stiches.

sorry forgot the link

“Should I be reading wrong side opposite. Meaning if it’s K1 wrong side I should be purling.”

Yes. When you read a chart, the chart only shows what the knitting will look like from the RS (right side) of the fabric. Assuming you are working flat (back and forth) you will have to work the WS (wrong side) rows in the opposite direction and with opposite sts to get them to appear correctly from the RS.

So, if the chart shows the sts as being knits, you will knit on the RS but purl from the WS, to get knits to appear on the RS.
And since you worked/read the chart R to L on the RS, you will work/read L to R on the WS.

Hi and welcome!
You can either read the chart or follow the written directions. If you work with the chart, you can always check that you’re doing the correct sts by lookng at the written directions.
For the chart, read it as the directions say, right to left on the right side (odd) rows, left to right on the wrong side (even) rows. For the chart symbols, follow the key:
The open box =“knit” on Right Side rows & “purl” on Wrong Side rows
The box with the dot = “purl” on Right Side rows & “knit” on Wrong Side rows

Don’r try to think opposite, but look at the symbols as shown.

I’m starting again. Apparently I ended up with an extra stitch. Thank you for the help. I’m still a little confused but I’m going to follow the chart according to directions and see what happens.

Thanks again.

It may help in the beginning to put a marker or pin the the right side just to keep it clear which is RS and which WS. I think that after a few rows you’ll be able to see the pattern in your stitches and you won’t have to refer to the directions or the chart.
