Hello all,

I’m a newbie to this forum with a big problem I’m hoping someone can help me with.

I’ve just finished the front panel of a sweater featuring a picture of a rearing horse for my neice – to my horror I’ve realized I’ve managed to add an extra two inches to the sweater below the beginning of the horse.

I don’t want to rip the entire panel out but I need to reduce the length. How can I remove a good two inches above the ribbing but before the beginning of the graphic.

Any suggestions?

Desperately hoping for wisdom or alternatively miracles.

There is a way to do this but it might be confusing for a beginner. Can’t you just make the whole sweater 2 inches longer for growing room?

The way to make it shorter is to cut out the extra rows and graft the two parts back together using a darning needle.

You can put a needle through the stitches on the two rows you want to keep, then cut through the middle, take out the extra rows leaving a long tail for the grafting if you can, otherwise you can use a new piece of yarn. Then there are plently of instructions on grafting or Kitchener stitch online to show you how to get it back together.

Or instead of grafting, you can cut the co or the next row, unravel to where you need and reknit the bottom.

I thought about that but I’ve already made it two sizes bigger than she needs right now. It would be years before she could wear it at it’s current size.

The sleeves and back are already completed at the correct length as well.
