I am working on my pattern and I’m on row 14(purl) and it says to “add a stitch to the end of this row”…I’ve googled, searched and drove myself crazy and cant seem to find EXACTLY what I need…it doesn’t specify, M1L, M1R, M1A, YO, KBF etc. …it just simply says “add one stitch at the end of the row(increase one stitch total this row)” thats exactly how the instructions are written…I AM SO CONFUSED…yet it sounds & seems so simple!!!
Hi sydver!
When the directions don’t specify ‘what kind’ of increase to make, do whatever you feel most comfortable with.
Right now, I’m working on a sleeve that has increases at each end every 7th row until 8 increase rows have been worked.
So, every other increase row has the wrong side (the purl side) facing me. Row 7 is the right side (the knit side), Row 14 is the wrong side (the purl side), Row 21 is the right side again, Row 28 is the wrong side again, etc. etc.
When I’m making the increases at each end on the right sides facing me, I work a M1 just in between the very end stitch and the next stitch.
When I’m making the increases at each end on the wrong sides facing me, I work a M1, also just in between the very end stitch and the next stitch. However, for this one, since I want to ‘purl’ the M1…I work the purl through the back loop. It looks better from the right side.
Here is a link to our “Increases” video gallery! Scroll down on the page a bit, and find M1L and M1R and click on the selection that says:
[I]To work M1L on the Purl side.
M1L and M1R: use one of them for the increase at the beginning of the row, use the other one for the increase at the end of the row. M1L and M1R just indicates in which direction they ‘lean’. They’re just both M1’s.

When a pattern says ‘inc at end (or beg) of row’ it doesn’t have to be at the very edge. You can do kfb, or M1 between the edge st and the next one in. Just do whichever inc you’re used to doing.
Thanks ArtLady, I’ll give it a try!
That’s just it, I’m not use to doing any increase, this is my first try at it! I’m just confused as to whether I “cast” it on or attach it to an existing stitch? Because the pattern calls for adding a stitch at the end of row 14, then repeating for rows 9-14 until I have a certain stitch count. All the vidoes show adding the stitch in between 2 stitches, but I’m at the end…ya’ll are soooooooooooo helpful, thanks!
Oh, well go to the Increases page, take some other yarn and practice the different ones shown there. The kfb, knit front and back, may be easy for you, or the M1a which is like the loop cast on. It sort of doesn’t matter as long as you get another st on, that’s why they didn’t specify. Though the M1R/L need to be done between sts, so the other ones may be better.
“Add a stitch” is kind of an increase all right, but usually when they want you to increase, it says something more like “increase at the end of the row,” or “inc at each end of the row” or whatever. Since it doesn’t say increase really, I think I would be more inclined to throw an extra stitch on with a backward loop or turn the work and do one of the knitted on increases that put the new stitch right at the end.
But… it depends on what you are making and what they really meant. If you are making a sweater and are increasing a sleeve go with what ArtLady said. After all is said and done, maybe it doesn’t matter a bit if you put it right at the end or one or two stitches in from the end.
Good point; it depends where you are in the pattern and what comes next. The M1A is more or less the same as the loop cast on and will add a st at the edge if done after the end st.
