Newbee trying to knit aran sweater

I bought the book Aran knitting by Alice Starmore. The Na Craga pattern was suggested as my first sweater.

Im totally confused! Ive done 3" of a twisted rib stitch (knit in back of 2nd stitch, then knit in front of 1st stitch, slip off left needle together, p2…etc…)

Im now up to the actually pattern and it says to RIB 5? Is RIB an abbrevation for a stitch I dont know of???

If there aren’t any special instruction/abbreviations at end of pattern then I think this means to do some sort of rib.

Either k2 p3 or k1 p1 k1 p1 k1. How you figure that out, well… Hopefully something in the directions or the work to this point clues you in.

That means to work 5 sts in the rib pattern; if yours is k1 p1 you do that over 5 sts, if it’s k2, p2, work 5 sts of that - k2 p2 k1.

Most likely you want 5 stitches of the same rib pattern you have been doing.

Yes, it sounds like just 5 sts of the twisted rib. Do the 5sts in rib continue for the rest of the rows of the sweater body or is it only in this first row?

:aww: Hi Everyone! Thanks for all your quick replies!

Yes, theres 4 rows that make up the rib stitch. So if I have to do a Rib 5, is it from the first row of the rib pattern ?
:aww:

The instr. say :
Next Row INC.
Rib 5(1,3,8,5); *m1, rib 8(9,8,7,7); rep from * to the last 5(2,3,9,6)sts; m1, rib 5(2,3,9,6).

146(154,160,170,180)sts.

Thanks for all your help…im spending hours on this!

Continue the rib pattern for the 5 sts on each end of this increase row. Use whatever row of that rib pattern would normally follow.
If the next row starts with Rib 5, then use the next row of rib pattern and so on until a row starts off with some st other than the Rib 5. This may just be a short continuation of the rib up the sides or it could be a continuous ‘frame’ along the side edges. Good luck with the Aran and please post a picture of the finished sweater!

You work the next row of the rib pattern whichever row it would be. Do 5 sts of rib, then M1, and continue the next sts in the rib then another m1, continue to the end of the row to the last 5 sts, m1 and rib the last 5 sts.

To stick with a ribbing pattern you look at the stitches on the previous rows; if the next one is a purl st, purl it, if it’s a knit stitch then you would knit it or do the twisted rib. This may be the last row of ribbing, then you switch to stockinette or a cable pattern. It would help us and be easier to explain it if you could link to the pattern or even a picture, or post the twisted rib pattern stitch.

Thanks everyone for all your help! I continued from the last rib row I left off at and did the increase. I have the right amount of sts and everything looks good!

Onto the pattern. Im sure I will have more questions down the line.

Thanks again for the speedy replies and great advice!
