New to world of knitting! Knitty's Lucie Q's

I have been lurking on this board for about three weeks since I discovered I’m a pretty good knitter :happydance: (so far!). I have made a couple of scarves and hats, but I’m ready to try my hand at knitting a sweater! I fell in love with Knitty’s Lucie, but I can’t afford that yarn! I have tried searching all over the web for something similar, but all the fingering weight yarn gauges too small…and the heavy yarn isn’t as pretty :pout:.

Help! I soooo want to do this in the purdy colors (or similar) that the pattern calls for, but maybe a little more towards my budget! Any suggestions?

Thanks! Once I get some pics taken of my FO’s and my WIP’s, I’ll post em!

What kind of yarn does the pattern call for ? Sometimes there are substitutions out there for some types of yarn. Sorry I could not be much help.

Try for yarn substitutions. It’ll show you the gauge of X yarn, and then you can click on that gauge to see other yarns with the same gauge.

I am knitting Lucie right now with the specified yarn, and it’s string thin!!! but I was able to get gauge with size 5 needles.

The yarn called for is 38 bucks for 510 yards… that works out to be about 7.50 per 100 yards, which is a good prince (IMHO). The Koigu KPPPM would be a good substitute if you’re looking for similar colors, and might save you about 50 bucks in yarn costs.

You can try some hand-dyed sock yarn. Tencel blend sock yarns have a luster a bit like silk blends. Same thing for bamboo blend sock yarns. I think you’re going to have to not look at the gauge on the label too hard, but rather look to see if the weight/yardage ratio matches the suggested yarn for the pattern. That patterns gauge has always puzzled me. It has the weight/yardage ratio of rather fine sock yarn. To get gauge on such comparatively large needles with a yarn like that, I think it must be difficult. Hildie can correct me if I’m wrong.

ETA: I just looked at the pattern and it looks like 7 sts = 1" This is a common gauge for thicker sock yarns, and I’ve gotten it, for example, in using Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sport on size 3 needles.

Some possible substitutions:

Good luck.

Thank you so much for your help! I think I figured out what I am going to do…either I’m going to bite the bullet and buy some of the beautiful colorways that are recommended…or…I’m going to try my hand at dyeing my own :thud: ! Eek! I’ll keep you posted!

Wish me luck
