New to knitting

Hi.all. I’m new to knitting and self taught.
I would like to knit a cap for my husband as a b/day gift. It would just be a beanie type cap.
What size needles and what type of yarn should I use? Also, how many stitches should I start with?
Thanks for any help.

Have you joined Ravelry yet (free to join)? It has a wealth of patterns, many free. You can find beanies in many yarn weights. A swatch made with your yarn of choice will help you determine which needle size will match the gauge given in the pattern. Think of needle size given in a pattern as a starting point.
Here’s a pattern in worsted weight.

This one is sport weight.

Here’s a super bulky.

There are loads more to pick from. The patterns will tell you how many sts to cast on and give you all the directions for knitting flat or in the round. Your choice.

We love new knitters. And the more experienced ones too. Are you familiar with working in the round or do you need a pattern for a hat knit flat and seamed. I highly recommend working in the round but it depends on what you want to do and what needles you have.

If you want a pattern, besides Ravelry you can just Google knitted hat patterns for beginners. There are tons of free patterns out there. Your biggest problem will be in deciding which one to use.

Thanks for the quick replies. I appreciate it.
It’s nice to know there’s a friendly place to ask questions and get help.
I’ve found lots of patterns and I have joined Ravelry. Oh my! Where ( what) will I start? I want to make so many of these caps and socks and mittens. I spent over an hour looking at patterns and still haven’t decided.

You’re among friends and fellow knitting adicts. We understand the problem.
Have fun with all the choices!

Here’s another good pattern. It’s free. I made one for my friends partner and he wears it all the time.

I used Drops Merino Extra fine, not expensive.

With 4mm, 40cm fixed circular needle.
