I just introduced myself on the intro board, but for those that didn’t catch it. I’m a young gal in Canada, and I’m trying to teach myself to little avail. KnittingHelp videos are infinitely helpful, but I’m struggling with some lingo.
What does this mean:
Cast on 193 sts. Do not join.
Working back and forth across needle work 7 rows in garter st (knit every row) noting that first row is WS and inc 59 sts evenly across last row. 252 sts.
If I were to try to decipher, I’ve casted my 193 sts on, am I now to knit 7 rows? What does it mean to include 59 sts evenly accross the last row to get 252 sts, and how do I do it??
First of all what are you making and if you have a link it would help if you can include it. Always give as much info as you can.
Now… yes, it means knit 7 rows…they want you to knit 6 rows and increase (not include) 59 stitches evenly across the 7th row. That is appx every 3.2 stitches. It’s not critical so just do it every 3 stitches or 4 stitches, but do fit them all in.
It also says to note that the first row is a WS (wrong side) row. That may be be important later. What I do is put a marker/safety pin on one side or the other and make a note which side it is so you’ll always know. You can move it up after you’ve knit several rows so it’s not hanging on the edge.
INSTRUCTIONS
Cast on 193 sts. Do not join.

Proceed in pat as follows:
1st row: (RS). Knit.
2nd row: K6. *(K1. P1. K1) in next st. Sl1. K2tog. psso. Rep from * to last 6 sts. K6.
3rd row: Knit.
4th row: K6. *Sl1. K2tog. psso. (K1. P1. K1) in next st. Rep from * to last 6 sts. K6.
These 4 rows form pat.
Cont in pat until work from beg measures approx 47 ins [119.5 cm] ending with a 4th row of pat.
Next row: (RS). Knit, dec 59 sts evenly across. 193 sts.
Work 6 rows in garter st. Cast off knitways (WS).
No it doesn’t change anything, you work 6 rows in garter stitch, marking the odd numbered rows as the WS, then increase the sts on the next row. Then begin working the pattern stitch, which will be on the RS.

There are several sites that do the calculations for you when you need to add stitches (or decrease). google: “how to decrease knit stitches evenly” and you will find them.
