New Computer

The first of May I bought a new computer from Best Buy. Brought it home, unpacked it and set it up. Hooked everything up and turned it on. Nothing happened; it was not connecting to the monitor. So took it back to Best Buy and demanded my money back I had to wait for two weeks for my money coming back in the form of a refund check. I used it to buy a new computer off Amazon. It came, unpacked and set it up, hooked up the monitor and other items. Turned it on and it worked for a few days then sound quit working. Got it going again with help from Microsoft taking the computer, determined it to be driver related. So got the driver issue settled, and it worked till a day later sound went out again. I have to take to a computer repair shop to find out what is going on. I have a new computer and can’t use. Using my laptop to post this

So painful. You have my sympathy. We’ve unfortunately become experts in complaining and nagging companies until they make things, services, whatever right. Good luck with the computer problems and let us know how it’s going. Fingers crossed!

I will

Yikes, I’m sorry they’re putting you through this… I stopped buying from Amazon over a decade ago and I’d heard the quality had become terrible… I’ve been debating saving up for a Framework computer. I tried to reach out to their customer service for more information and had a really frustrating exchange, but the modularity is appealing… Other than that I’m not sure what brands could be trusted with decent products… I hope they make it right by you!

i hope so too. The first computer was a Lenovo. The one I bought on Amazon is an Acer

My last couple of computers have been from powerC.com im in the UK, don’t know if this option is available where you are.
When I say last couple it sounds like they didn’t last but the first one was maybe ten years old before I bought the second and even then it was working enough for most jobs but my son wanted to do some heavier lifting with animation and coding etc so we got a big upgrade. This one we might have had five years or so and its like new.
With this you choose all the parts, they build it.
You can have an operating system installed or not. I use linux ubuntu as they never make any of my stuff obsolete the way Microsoft do. My monitor is nearly 25 years old and still going strong.

Huge commiserations on what you’re going through with these makes and sellers, it’s infuriating. It should be plug in and go.
Can you get a refund from amazon?

I wondered the same about Amazon return and refunding. I know that return policies aren’t consistent. I’ve tried some electronic things from Amazon that while they promised would work out of the box with Linux, don’t. I was able to do a free return and got a refund.

I need to get my laptop worked on. I don’t even know how old it is but at least five years, I’m sure. I think the keyboard should be replaced and I need some help with some other techy things. It’s a Lenovo so was very sad to see the Amazon one is Lenovo. Mine’s been great. I wonder about the seller on Amazon and their reputation. I have a really hard time finding info like that (I’m stupid about such things) and Amazon seems to go out of their way to make it more difficult. I’m thinking of getting a Brax tablet that has kill switches for everything and I’d plug in a monitor and keyboard, etc. The ā€˜tablet’ is larger than a normal tablet and has more computing power than I’m ever likely to need. It’s a privacy centered device. I think you told me before, in another thread, that my degoogled Brax privacy phone isn’t available in the UK. I saw just this morning that some tech companies are refusing to comply with the new laws being passed requiring age verification here in the US. I sure hope they stick to their guns and refuse to cave.

I’m impressed that you hooked up your computer in the first place. If it wasn’t for my husband, I would not own a computer. I’m too stupid to figure out all that computer stuff.

I seriously doubt you’re too stupid. I find these things challenging but can typically manage with some help from looking things up online. I bet you could too.

Looking things up online has become difficult with results becoming biased and search operators like ā€œ-ā€ stopped working so you can’t avoid the irrelevant biased stuff

But if you’re looking for a privacy phone in the EU, do I have good news for you! I’m using a Fairphone with e/OS/ by Murena, which is a degoogled version of Android. One of the system apps is a privacy one that blocks trackers, lets you see which trackers and which apps, does VPN things like fake geolocalisation and IP masking, and overall I can use apps that would normally connect to a Google account, sometimes without my knowledge, without having to connect because my phone impedes microG and prevents it. I’m very happy with it!

Have you spoken with amazon and acer about a product gurantee and a return for full refund? Surely if it doesn’t work it should go back at their expense?

I think maybe the sound card might have been knocked loose from its socket during shipping to my house.. If it has the computer repair shop can tell me. Or if the sound card is damaged, they will be able to tell .

So far, two brand new computers in so short a time - sounds so frustrating. With the sound working as soon as you put it on initially, but then not working after a driver fix, and again a day later, I wouldn’t presume it’s a hardware issue. It may be a driver issue, caused by a Windows update overwriting the audio driver, or a problem with the motherboard’s onboard audio chipset. You might need to do some research before choosing a repair shop to pay for: Check Device Manager, and look for warning symbols on the audio devices. See if there was a new driver recently installed by Windows Update. Ensure that the right playback device is set in Sound Settings. If audio drivers are available on manufacturer’s support site, install the manufacturer supplied drivers instead of the generic ones supplied by Windows. Check with both headphones and loudspeakers to eliminate an external audio problem. I would also check the seller’s return and warranty policy as the computer is still very new. If the problem is a hardware problem, it might be more beneficial to replace it than repair it, at least when the expense is not yours. Hopefully it is something simple and software related. Everyone wants to spend money on a new system, but not on the problem with it being a driver issue! I hope you’re able to get it sorted out quickly.

I have done everything you listed in your reply. This new computer worked for a few days then quit sound. Got sound working again with help from Microsoft after determining it was driver related. She installed the drivers and sound returned. then a day later it quit again. I think the sound card might have been damaged in shipping when I purchased it. I have dealt with this computer repair shop with other computers I had before this one.

This Acer computer has a setting I did not know about.. Down where you change the volume, you click on a symbol at the end of the sound bar choice , I click on the top little design and choose audio and headphones. Then it will work with my headphones
