This is probably a really dumb question but I’m stuck on it. After you have finished the ribbing, the pattern I’m using says to begin 60 rows of stockinette stitch. Well, everything I’ve read says stockinette stitch is knit one row, purl one row.
I’ve tried this on the socks but it ends up very lumpy. I’ve also read patterns that say on socks when you do the stockinette stitch you’re just knitting with no purling.
So does anyone know if I should be just knitting or should I be knitting a row (working on the outside of the sock) and then working from the inside of the sock, purling a row? I’m using 5 dpns.
It’s not a stupid question.
When you’re working on a flat piece, stockinette is knit one row, purl one row. The purls are on the wrong side of the piece, and the knits are on the right side of the piece. When you work in the round, you’re only working on the right side of the piece, so stockinette in the round is knit every row.
Thank you so much! I have two “how to” knit books and I’ve read everything I can find on the web. Instructions go into great detail on how to do the ribbing then skip to how to do the heel and leave out the middle.
Hey, socks are tuff to get the hang of, but before you know it you’ll be a pro at them, took me ages to finally get it down to a science…socks are one of my favs actually.
