Needle size for socks

I read somewhere that when knitting socks it’s a good idea to use a smaller needle size than the yarn label says to. This to make the sock firmer, I guess.

Would this be the case if I bought a yarn called “sock yarn”? Or would the gauge be adapted to sock knitting?

The label calls for 5.5mm dpns and I have 5mm ones at home. Would you use the fives or go buy something a little smaller to “adjust for knitting socks”?

Thanks in advance!

I’d check the gauge on the pattern and go with that. Any ‘adjustment’ would be built in, I imagine. If you’re working without a pattern, then one of our sock people will have to comment.

I’ve made a couple of pairs of socks using KP Simple Stripes sock yarn. I used size 3 needles for the first pair, and they’re baggy on my feet. The socks are fine for lounging around without shoes. I used size 1 needles for the second pair and they’re a tiny bit snug, but much better. The needle size makes a difference, so I’d definitely do a swatch next time to check the gauge.
