X’s posts inspired me to go look at sock on Ravelry. I came across Evil Sock Genius Lessons.
Too much math for me, figuring row gauge to know when to start the heel. I try it on. Works every time.
Cat Bordhi may well be a genius when it comes to knitting. My limited experience with her videos is that she makes things overly complicated and her stories aren’t my thing. I gave up on the Sweet Tomato Heel before I tried it. Someone posted that it’s best for a wide heel and that put an end to my interest in it.
i’m off to salem this weekend for my niece’s 5th b-day… bringing my sock knitting with me for the hotel. might end up getting both feet sections done so i can start the heels next week!
I turned the heel last night!:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:
Thankfully, it was very very simple. And I no problems whatsoever. Whew! Now I know I can do a toe-up sock easily! :woot:
I just started the socks for my Mom as I was putting them off to see if I could do them as toe-up ones. Now that I know I can, I’m starting them. The other one is going well and i think that I will do them as ankle socks because I don’t feel like doing a regular length because I’m lazy. gasp I’ll probably send you a pic of the finished one sometime…
You like the short row toe? I’ve never quite gotten around to trying it, Judy’s Magic Cast On and Increasing to fit without swatching is all I’ve done. Having to know my gauge and all seems too complicated. :teehee: I’d hate to make that toe and then find out it wouldn’t fit.
if i’ve learned one thing about socks with my own sock knitting so far… it’s to buy them at walmart… no, ha ha, kidding, ha, chuckle… no, it’s that slightly smaller than you think, is better. gauge swatch if you must, and then knit the damn things 5-10% smaller than the actual measurements you need. otherwise you end up with socks that snug-fit your mom but were supposed to loose-fit your 5 yo niece
X, sounds like you know from experience. That would be a bummer.
Actually, my mom loved those socks I made for her that time so much she ordered another pair! And I am going to be brave and try to knit them two at a time on long circulars. The sock yarn and the needles are in the mail, they are supposed to arrive tomorrow. Wish me luck!
Actually, the needles and such came this afternoon! So I’ve been trying them out. KnitPicks’ circulars are so awesome! I really love them! And the yarn is so pretty!:woohoo: :cheering:
OK, I want to see your yarn and needles so dang it, please post a pic…assuming you can. Some people can’t for whatever reason, like no camera.
ETA I’ve got Knit Picks interchangeable Sunstrucks and the rest of my needles are Knitter’s Pride. I’ve noticed my Knit Picks cables want to separate from the metal joining piece. I’ve also read that the Knit Picks needles are now made in China and aren’t what they used to be. I hope yours prove to be high quality but if not let them know and get them replaced.
It’s a little blurry but here it is. The beige colored yarn is Stroll Tonal in Mocha and the other one is Stroll Handpainted in Woodland. Then the needles are size 0,1(2.25 mm),2(2.75 mm), and 3. Then I got a pair of foldable scissors and locking stitch markers to bring the price up to $50 so I could qualify for free shipping.
Yes,GG, the needles are now made in China. And the cable on the US1 ones is alot thicker and less flexible than the others. I don’t know why. It’s weird. But it’s not that bad, I’m sure I can live with it. But all the others are really nice.
Love the yarn! They know what they’re doing with that free shipping @$50 thing. We succumb, what’s one more item, it’s less than the shipping would be, I saved up my list so I can use it… As long as the needles are good for you to use, that’s all that matters. I was wanting to be sure you’re aware of the guarantee that as far as I know is still there in case you do encounter probs. Enjoy knitting that luscious yarn.
Thanks! Yes, I knew about the guarantee, but thanks for looking out for me! The Mocha yarn is for my Mom and the Woodland is for my own self. I decided since Mom was saying how her feet were amazingly warm when she wore the socks, I decided to see for myself.
Warm sox. IME the tighter the gauge the warmer the sock. I have some really tight stitch sox that I wear when my feet get really cold and have others that are a little looser knit that I usually wear. Unless my feet are ice cubes wearing my hand knits to bed makes my feet too warm and I’ve started wearing cotton socks that cam from Walmart to bed.
I notice they talk about Turkish cast on which is similar in results to Judy’s Magic Cast on. Have you tried it? I’ve used both but it seems to me I get a toe which doesn’t stick up at the ends which I have to tack down after I am finished with the Turkish. I need to knit more even rows of knitting before going into increases I think. I tend to knit tight but am getting better about looser knitting now.
