Need pattern for Baby Scarf

Hello everyone!

I purchased a beautiful soft 100% baby alpaca yarn from Misti Alpaca Chunky Yarn and a girlfriend asked me if I would knit her baby a scarf. I don’t know about babies and scarves, isn’t there a hazard or something? Anyway, I told her this but she still wants one. Any ideas what pattern I should use? It is for a baby boy and the yarn color is like a merlot color.

Thanks!!!

BTW, I can knit and purl but that’s about it. I am still a beginner so nothing tooo fancy ok! :teehee:

I didn’t know of baby scarf patterns, but I found this one, which is cute. It does include the M1 increase (make 1) which Amy has a video for if you would like to give it a try.

Thanks Becka! Real cute!! I can do M1’s too just not fancy cables yet!

I was scared of cables, and it took me a few tries, but try something like the Irish Hiking Scarf, it has very easy cable instructions. I still can’t do the darn charts…I enjoy cables now. They’re really not that hard.
I have 2 kids and wouldn’t even give my 2 1/2 year old a scarf…to eaches own I guess. :??

The hazard with kids and scarves is that they won’t keep them on. Seriously. Could you convince your friend of a hat instead??

I’m pretty sure the hazard with kids and scarves is that they could choke or be strangled with them by accident. They aren’t even supposed to have string on their hats, drawcords or anything like that. I know I wouldn’t put a scarf on my baby. Nor would I knit one for someone else. I would make a hat anyway and just find an article online somewhere for your friend about clothing hazards and kids…there are dozens of them… .do a google.

there are some very cute hats though!!! Good luck!

I’m sorry if it sounded like I was making light of the hazards. I just think it absurd to put a scarf on a baby so the true hazards weren’t even an issue with my kids just cause we didn’t have scarves.

There is a baby scarf pattern in Debbie Bliss Baby Knits for Beginners

Thanks everyone! I agree with what you are saying. I don’t like them for babies either. I am going to google it as someone suggested and take it to her on Saturday. We were supposed to go yarn shopping, I am sure I can make him a cute hat instead. Thanks again for your concern!

I made my 1 year old a neck gaitor last year instead of a scarf. I don’t think it is a choking hazaard. It is not so wide that it would catch on some thing, just big enough to get over her head. No wind goes in and she can’t lose it.

If you like the look of cables, but are intimidated, try the “cables” on the Knitty Sugar on Snow pattern. I made them and they came out really cute, and no cable needle required.

You know I really liked that pattern in Knitty. Thanks! I may just try that!!!

HI! I have a 13mo old daughter and I thought of the same issue. I am going to make her a neckwarmer/dickey with buttons instead. Someone sent me a link to a good one:

I am just going to modify it by casting on only 40 - 50 stitches.

If you google neckwarmer or dickey there are some to choose from.

Not sure how old your girlfriends DD is but I would even go with a neckwarmer for a baby any younger than 8-9 months. A nice blanket is much better.

Good luck!
