Go ahead and knit the other sleeve and then get back to us. You are going to join the sleeves to the body in that yoke part and you need to have both sleeves knit to do that.
I’m almost done with the second sleeve… What should I do now? I don’t understand the instructions.
:knitting:
When you get both sleeves done you’re going to have 3 tubes, that look like this - oOo - when you hold them together and look down at them. Where they touch is the underarm where you would have bound off sts. They get joined later. What you do next is take the sleeve you’re just finishing, BO the sts on the underarm and knit around to the first bound off st. Then place a marker, p1 from the Front (they don’t tell you this until a few sts later, but that’s what you do) slip a stich, p1, place another marker, and work XX front sts, place marker, p1, slip 1 st, p1, place marker, work the sts of the other sleeve, and repeat, only after you place markers you work on the back stitces to p, slip p. Then you’re back at the first sleeve which will be your beginning of round.
What Sue says is very helpful. When finishing the sleeve work the last round to 4 or 5 before your beginning of round marker. Then bind off the 8 or 10 right across the beginning of a new round. Stop right there. Now you take your long circular and using it, knit the rest of the way around the sleeve you are finishing.
When you get back to the bound off stitches you will hold the sweater body up like Sue pictured (Take time to hold the whole sweater together with the body and the sleeves pointing in the right directions to make a sweater, imaging the yoke being where the parts come together. That will help you picture what must happen to put the parts together to form the sweater.) and begin to knit across the front of the sweater between the two sets of bound off stitches at the underarms. Put in all the purls, place markers etc. where they tell you to. When you get done with the front section you then work around the other sleeve. Lastly you work across the back of the sweater.
Sue’s illustration of the “oOo” is good. Picture the 3 circles actually touching each other (those are the underarms) and you will knit all around the outside of the three circles.
I have found that sometimes when they say to use a long circular needle for this type of yoke that it is still difficult to actually do it all on one needle like they say. Sometimes I have found 2 or 3 circular needles to be needed to make it easier. But remember you want the result to be one continuous circle of knitting (like it was all on one needle, if you can’t actually get that to work at this point) around the outside edge of a sleeve, across the front of the body, then the outside edge of the other sleeve, and on around the back of the body. After you do a few rounds you can usually get it to work on one needle and can ditch the extra ones you may have decided to add.
I hope between reading Sue’s post and mine you can get this done.

Nice touch, which I never thought to mention; would like to use that in the future…
this is the part that confuses me: pm, p1, slip
1 st purlwise wyif, p1, pm…where do I work these stitches into? the front stitches?

Yes, I think so, if you are talking about the first time you encounter that set of instructions. You will have that 4 times. Once at each raglan seam where the sleeves meet the body.
pm means place marker. You just slide a round marker onto the right hand (RH) needle at that point. P1 = purl into the next st. It may be on another piece that you are connecting or whatever the next st is.
slip1 st purlwise wyif
This is all one action. Have the yarn in front (wyif=with yarn in front) and slip the next st by inserting your RH needle into the stitch purl wise, don’t work it just slip it to the RH needle.
Then purl the next st. And then place another marker on the RH needle at that spot.
I hope this helps.
From the numbers given in the pattern you would do them on the body stitches. It doesn’t mention the front until after it gives them, but you’ve used up all the sleeve sts, so they have to be on the Front.
Dec for Underarm: Work to 4 (4, 5, 5, 5) sts
before marker, BO 8 ( 8, 8, 10, 10 ) sts—38 (38,
40, 43, 47) sts rem. Do not break yarn.
YOKE
With larger circular needle, work across 38
(38, 40, 43, 47) sts of Left Sleeve, pm, p1, slip
1 st purlwise wyif, p1, pm, work 39 (46, 53, 58,
65) sts of Front, pm, p1, slip 1 st purlwise wyif,
p1, pm, work 38 (38, 40, 43, 47) sts of Right
Sleeve, pm, p1, slip 1 st purlwise wyif, p1, pm,
work 39 (46, 53, 58, 65) sts of Back, pm, p1,
slip 1 st purlwise wyif, p1, pm for BOR—166
(180, 198, 214, 236) sts.
Those are the directions beginning with the last of the second sleeve. So do what it says for the rest of the sleeve part. Then when it says YOKE work those 1st 38-47 (depending on size) on that first sleeve. The first pm, p1, slip 1 purlwise wyif, p1, pm with be right when you begin adding the front stitches to the needle with the sleeve stitches. PM just after you knit off the sleeve sts, and the p1 will be the first stitch you work of the front of the body. Do that little seam section and then knit across the next 39 (46, 53, 58,
65) sts of Front.
I think you will be doing the next seam part (thats the pm, p1, etc. part) beginning on the last of the front based on the number of stitches the front and back are supposed to have-- 42(52, 59, 64, 71). Say if you were doing the smallest size and had 42 stitches on the front and back. The first seam part uses up 3 of the stitches, then it says to work 39 sts from the front. 39+3=42 so you still have 3 left and those would be the seam on the other side of the front. So it looks like the seam stitches are always worked on the front or back sections and never on the sleeves themselves.
Then knit around the second sleeve and right at the beginning of the back section you work the 3rd seam part using 3 sts, work across 39 back stitches (smallest size) and then use the last 3 stitches of the back for the last seam. Then you are back at the beginning of the round which is at the beginning of the first sleeve.
I got through it! Thanks to both of you, couldn’t have got through it without you! I will post a picture when finished
Great news!! :cheering: :cheering: I’d love to see your picture.
