Need help with sweater seam stitches, please!

This is my first time making a sweater and I am confused about the “raised increases” at the sweater seam stitches.

It says with right-hand needle pick up running thread between needles (this part I get) than knit up a stitch ([COLOR=Red]this part I don’t get[/COLOR])!

Can you help?

‘Knit up’ is also a term for ‘pick up’. It would be like one of the M1R/L sts shown on the increases page.
