Need help with slipper pattern

I have a pattern for “Seamless Slippers” by Peggy Pignato that I got from from the internet; however, I am having problems with it. The pattern states it is knit partly back and forth (but not really “flat”, so you will need to use DPN at the heel end, which is where you begin) and knit partly in the round.

Here is the pattern:

Cast on 2 stitches.
Row 1: slip 1, k1
Row 2: slip 1,m1,knit 1 (3 sts)
Row 3-5: sl 1,k across
row 6: sl 1, m1, k to last st, m1,k1 (5sts)
row 7-9: sl1,k across
row 10: repeat row 6 (7 sts)
row 11-13: sl 1,knit across
row 14: repeat row 6 (9 sts)
row 15-17: sl 1, k across
row 18: repeat row 6 (11 sts)

I get the top part, here is what I don’t understand:

You will need to need the following part by having each side on a dpn, but you will still be knitting back and forth:

Pick up and knit 9 sts along edge.
Turn.
Sl 1, knit 19.
Pick up and knit 9 sts along other edge. (29 sts)

Next row: (WS): k9,p1,k9,p1,k9
Row 2: Knit across

Repeat these 2 rows for 4-5" (half or a little less than half the finished foot length), inc 1 st on last row(30sts).

Count the no. of ridges and make a note of it for your second slipper.

Join and start knitting in the round.

Can someone help me with this? I don’t get it. How can you knit with dpn’s and not join? I’ve tried everything I know, and it’s not working!

Thanks,

I’m picturing three needles with stitches on them, is that right?

I would knit across the first needle with the 4th dpn. Then knit across the second, then the third. When you get to the end of the third needle, turn and work across the back of each one in turn.

I started out on 2 needles until I pick up 9 stitches(now I’m on 3); turn, then I don’t understand knit 19, when I only have 9 stitches on the needle that I picked up stitches on. If I try to knit on the second needle, then I have joined before I’m supposed to, and still end up on 2 needles til I join the other side. I don’t know if this is right or not.

Thanks,

So you’ll have 11 stitches on the center needle, and 9 on each side that you’ve picked up, each on their own needle?

Sl1 and knit across 8 from the needle you just picked up stitches on, then across the 11 on the next needle–your stitches will be connected between the needles, but not joined in a circle. Then you pick up the other 9 on a third needle.

The knitting seems like it will be all one piece but wouldn’t fit well on a straight needle. Imagine that you’re three needles are really one U shaped needle that you’re working back and forth on, if that helps any.

So, I just knit around & around, it’s not joined, just connected? So, when I do join, (what’s the difference–I thought anytime you’re on dpn’s and knitting around, it’s joined in a circle. I’m just confused, but appreciate your quick response.

You won’t be knitting around and around at first–you’ll be knitting back and forth as if the three needles in the stitches were really just one. After that section is completed, you’ll join and start knitting in the round.

  needle 1- \__/-needle 3

. . … . . .needle 2

I think I understand, I’m knitting it as I talk to you, so I hope I’m doing this right.

Thanks for your patience–

It should work.

I’m doing what you said, and I “think” it’s working–I’ll let you know more tomorrow how it turns out. This is the first time that I’ve gotton this to going–very frustrating, esp. since I’ve decided I like dpn’s. It seems you always hit on something you’ve never done before (makes knitting very interesting).

My slipper is coming along nicely–had to put it down for a while–went back to it this evening and it’s working! Thanks, Ingrid for your help.
