The pattern is indeed confusing even for a translation. Drops often over specifies and gives redundant directions. In this case there’s missing directions.
Knitting in the round gets past the problem of the back seam. Knitting back and forth is possible but you need to move the stitches so that you can join the end of row to the beginning of row. The pattern doesn’t explain how to do this but if it’s worked on straight needles it would mean moving the sts to another needle or holder and knitting off that.
This diagram shows where to join. The circle would show the new beginning of row at the mid-back. It could also be the beginning of round if the poster chooses to knit in the round.
Well, I have understood now, despite my garbled confusion earlier… and I hope @Lisasmith understands this now too so they can continue their progress with this pattern.
The photo showing where the join happens is also very useful.
I’ve made a few drops patterns and those I have chosen have been fine to follow but this one certainly was confusing. Thanks salmonmac.
OK…Let me see if I get this straight. I will join stich zero to stich 152 and just stich in a circle with the circular needles and not worry about joining anything. And the helmet face opening was the initial 100 stiches I started off with?
Thank you so much @salmonmac and @Creations for all your advice! My first cowl and my first “complicated” knitting project…
Yes, join the first stitch and stitch 152 and work in a circle. That seems simpler to me than having to put a seam down the back. If you have the correct length needles to work this it’ll be fine.
Come back if you have more questions. Definitely want to see a photo when you finish!
I will definitely upload a photo. But crazy that I picked this convoluted pattern for my first ‘complicated’ knit. I think the people that made this pattern needs to be notified…
Really not a bad idea to let Drops know what you think of the pattern. There are lots of questions and comments on the pattern itself.
