I’m working on my first circular needle sweater (hoodie) and I’m trying to make sense of the neck portion as I have not seen these notations before. The front and back were knit separately and I’m now working on the front portion. I believe the left and right shoulders are being knit separately, but I’m not sure when or how to knit the stitches on the wire for the neck or what the 12-12 sts notation means. Any help in basic description would be greatly appreciated!!
Neckline
WS: place the central 20sts on a stitch wire.
Right Side
RS: cast off 1 st for the neck on every second row.
Shoulder
WS: after the last cast off for the neck, cast off 13 sts for the shoulder.
Continue cast off for the shoulder on WS (12-12)sts.
Left side
WS: knit to end of rnd. Cast off 1st for every second row for the neck.
Shoulder
RS: on the row before the last cast off for the neck, cast off 13sts for the shoulder. Continue cast off for the shoulder on RS 12-12sts.
Welcome to the forum!
What is the name of your pattern and the designer?
You’re correct. The left and right shoulders are being knit separately, right shoulder first. The 12-12 is giving you a stitch count and might be for two different sizes. Depending on how many sts you have for the shoulder it’s might also be telling you to cast off 12 sts from the armhole edge on the next WS row and possibly the following WS row.
The directions for the collar or neckband will tell you how to use the 20sts on hold at the center neck. Read ahead and see if you see that perhaps under Finishing.
Thank you so much! I love that a forum like this exists! In my original post, I took just the stitches sizing for the large size, which is why the 12-12 confused me. When I split up the shoulders separately, I have 44 stitches on either side and 20 stitches on the wire for the neck.
Here is the pattern I am working on. The section is “front piece” on page 5 and I get stuck from the Neckline section:
I feel like the pattern is missing wording like: Right Side:
RS: Cast off 1 stitch every second row “until you have X# of stitches or for X# of rows”
The pattern directions at least here, are minimal. You have to back calculate the stitch number. The right shoulder cast offs are 13sts, 12sts and 12sts for 37sts out of 44sts. That leaves you 7sts for the neck decrease or cast off. You’re casting off 1 stitch every RS row for 7 RS rows.
Once you’ve completed the neck decreases for the right sweater front, start the shoulder bind offs from the armhole edge on the WS row as given above.
The 20sts on hold at the center of the front neck will be divided in half and used for the hood. Start with 10sts on the right side of the center 20, continue to pick up sts around the neck ending with the other 10sts of the center front.
Thank you thank you thank you. I will try this out now! I feel like this is the community I’ve been missing all these years of crafting. Absolutely incredible!
