Need help with knitting cast on pattern!!

Hello all!

I just casted on a new knitting project using a free pattern and I’m so confused D: I’m making the large size, so I cast on 113 initially.

[BODY

With the waste yarn and 3.5 mm needles, cast on 91

(101) 113 (123) sts for Italian cast on.

Knit 2 rows.

Break the waste yarn.

With one string of each yarn (Merci and Tilia) purl

1 round. Do not turn work, but continue by knitting in

the round.

Purl 2 rounds.]

This is the part that confuses me:

[Next round: *p1, insert right needle below the first st

knit with Merci and Tilia (3 rows below) and knit

a st*, repeat from * to *, until you have 1 st left.

Pick up the st below and knit it together with the last st

=

180 (200) 224 (244)]

I have no idea how knitting three rounds below is supposed to work here. The cast on language is strange to me because all the Italian cast on methods I’ve seen are tubular which is obviously not the case as all the stitches in the round are either knit or purled at this point. Or the provisional Italian cast on is done differently than is described here and also immediately a rib. I know I’m supposed to pull up loops because how else would I be doubling my stitch count here. But I’m also concerned with the stability of my stitches once I remove the waste yarn.

Edit 9.5.26: I’m trying to add photos for clarity but I can’t get the system to allow them right from my phone :frowning:

This is a bit unusual but the idea of knitting into the stitch several rows below is demonstrated in this video. You should follow the first form demonstrated and don’t be concerned about right or left lean. Since you’re working into the next stitch 3 rows below, the lean won’t be as pronounced as in the video.
Bring the loop up on to the right needle and then purl the next stitch. This will almost double the stitch count.

Follow the pattern for a few more rows before removing the waste yarn. It’s probably best to try this out on a smaller swatch rather than all the cast on sts. Then you will have a better idea of how tightly or loosely the stitch should be pulled up. And the swatch will at least give you confidence in the stability of the sts. I usually drop down a few needle sizes for these cast ons although you may not need to.

What is the name of your pattern and designer?

Was this the correct link salmonmac? It doesn’t take me to a video.

Hmm, it is the correct link for an Arnall-Culliford video at MDK.
Here’s another to the same video.

Sorry, maybe it was my tablet not showing the video when i looked earlier, or perhaps i just overlooked it, i only saw the text part. I see the video now.
The second one is showing as intarsia in the round for me.

Off to watch the video now.
Thanks

Edited to add. What a lovely technique the dip stitch is! I have learned a new thing (and now need to try it out).
It wasn’t at all what i expected. I thought the OP was asking about a type of rolled hem at the cast on.

Thanks!

Thank you for the video, this explains it so clearly!

The pattern is Kronborg by Maria Bach Jensen, this is the link to the ravelry page: here

Thank you for the pattern information. It’s a beauty with all those lovely cables and texture.

Enjoy working it!
