Need help understanding top pattern

Hi!

I’m wanting to knit the Achelois tank top by Sari Nordlund and have a question about reading pattern repeats in charts. Do you knit the pattern repeat outlined in red or do you knit the entire row as covered by the chart?

The pattern states to “P1, k1, p1, work row 1 of the main chart, repeating the outlined pattern 3 times, then p1, k1, p1.” (Having cast on 42 stitches)

Please see attached photo for chart. Do I just knit the pattern repeat outlined in red 3 times? Although that would only be 36 stitches in total not 42? Where do I start knitting according to the chart?

Thank you for your help! Much appreciated!

The first row is also WS.

Lovely top!

Yes, work the area outlined in red 3 times. Start and end with the p1,k1,p1.

So the row is: Work the p1,k1,p1 then the chart by purling stitch 1, working the 10 stitch repeat 3 times then working stitches 12-16. Finish with p1,k1,p1.
That’ll be 3+1+ (10x3) + 5 + 3 = 42sts

Since it starts with a WS row, doesn’t the chart start on the left, where the row number is? So, p1,k1,p1, then stitches 16-12, THEN 3 repeats of the chart, end with p1?

Thank you. You’re absolutely right. Reads left to right on the WS rows.
