Hi, I’m new to this site . It looks great and I need help already.
I have found an old jacket pattern with instructions for both a crochet and knitted version made in 3 Suisses Sari yarn, which I think may be unavailable now. The tension in crochet is 12 1/2 DC and 16 rows to 10 cm using 4.00 mm hook. In knitted version the tension is 19 st and 38 rows over g-st on No8–4mm needles. Could you give me some advice on what yarn I could use as a substitute, please?
Need help to find a substitute for 3 suisse yarn
Welcome to KnittingHelp!

This is a worsted weight yarn, 42% cotton, the rest of the yarn made up of viscose and acrylic. It’s a worsted weight yarn and you should be able to substitute with a worsted weight, ideally of a cotton blend. That will give you a similar drape to the pattern that you found. Of course you could change to a worsted weight wool if you’d prefer.
Yarnsub.com is ordinarily a good site to use for yarn substitutions as they take these factors into consideration but I don’t see your yarn listed.
Thank you so much for your prompt reply.
To be honest, I’m not sure what worsted weight is. Does it correspond to Aran weight?
I’ll give Yarnsub.com a try.
Worsted weight is a bit lighter than aran weight. Here’s a helpful chart.

So worsted tends to be more toward the 20sts/4inches and aran more toward the 16sts/4inches but they can overlap.
What gauge or tension is given in your pattern? Can you give us the name of the pattern?
Unfortunately I can’t give you the name of the pattern. It was one I found my mother had torn out of a magazine and I’m 77!!
But it’s a very simple quick pattern for a jacket based on rectangles of double crochet. The tension given is 12 and 1/2 DC and16 rows to 10cm using a 4.00 mm hook.
The knitted version is just garter st and has a tension of 19 st and 38 rows to 10cm over g-stitchon 4mm needles
I liked the slight tweed effect and hoped this would be a good project for me to use with my daughter who is just learning
I might just have to experiment!
I’ll try and upload a photo of it.

Very nice! That looks like one of those comfortable pieces that never goes out of style.
And easy enough for a beginner to try and feel they have made something. Thanks for your help.

Hang on and I’ll try to upload it here. Let’s see if it works. I’m getting on a bit!
