Hello, I’m working on Cardigan Patternsize XL. I’m working on Right front piece.
Now, I have to casting on new stitches/increases for. “On 15th row in diagram begin increase for neck, cast on new stitches at the end of every row from right side as follows: 1 stitch 1 time, 2 stitches 2 times and 3 stitches 1 time = 54 stitches, work the increased stitches in the pattern”
Should I make 1 edge stitch after casting on new stitches? Or the 1 edge stitch only at the beginning of row?
Then…
When pattern says “At the end of next row from right sidecast on 17 new stitches = 71 stitches. Work A.1 with 1 edge stitch in garter stitch in each side. Make sure that the pattern fits the established pattern, the pattern will not fit one whole repetition towards mid front, but will fit towards the side.”
What pattern means of this part? (Italicized parts are point of my confusion).
Patterns often don’t include an edge stitch on the neck shaping. It may be because that garter edge stitch is not as helpful when picking up sts for the collar. The increases or decreases leave openings which are best avoided because they are not sturdy when you are picking up sts. That said, you could include an edge stitch during this part of the neck shaping if you’d like. The edge stitch does continue down the front once the neck shaping is finished.
As the final part of the shaping you’re to cast on sts at end of row for the front right center neck. The pattern in A1 will continue at the armhole edge (beginning of row) but the pattern will have to extend to include the new neck shaping as well as these new 17sts at the end of row.
The pattern at beginning of row will remain a continuation of A1 as you have been working. This is designed so that the patterns will align once the back and fronts are joined at the underarm. The pattern at the mid front will be a partial repeat. You can see this in the photo at the button band edge.
The pattern for the right front already allows for an edge stitch at each end of the row. You can continue an edge stitch at the end of the shaping rows and then on the straight edge of the front as you work the body (this is specified in the pattern as well). You’ll have the number of sts the pattern calls for.
“At the end of next row from right side cast on 17 new stitches” begin when I’ve done increases? (Which the last row for increases is row 21)
If it’s so, in what color should I do? Or maybe there is something else?
If im following correctoy you are asking about the edge stitch at centre front where the button band goes. You can do this in the main colour (white on the pattern pic). Your new cast in sts would benin the main colour too.
Yes, cast on the 17sts at the end of the next RS row after the initial increases. For example, cast on 1stitch at the end of row 1, 2sts end of rows 3 and 5, 3sts end of row 7 and 17sts end of row 9.
Begin the increases on row 15.
The pattern for size XL says: “On 15th row in diagram begin increase for neck, cast on new stitches at the end of every row from right side…”
Cast on one stitch at the end of row 15.
Cast on 2sts at the end of row 17.
Cast on 2sts at the end of row 19.
Cast on 3sts at the end of row 21.
Cast on 17sts at the end of row 23.
I’m not sure your new stitches in the neck shaping are following the chart exactly.
Looking at the overall pattern produced it looks like maybe you followed the chart wrong on that shaping side. If you follow each stitch down from the needle you can compare the correct pattern (between your markers) with the shaping pattern after the red marker). Now is a good time to check and rework if needed.
The new cast on 17 stitches, on the pattern these are done in the main colour, in your case this would be green. This is because the neck band and button band are worked in the main colour (on the oattern pic its white but your main colour is green). If you want a green neckband i suggest working the cast on in green for a slightly neater finish. If you want the band in white then go ahead with the cast on in white.
That looks good for the increases and shaping. You can check the pattern as Creations mentioned against the chart. It seems to me that the increases across the 8-stitch A1 look like this:
Sorry, I have a little bit confusion about this increases & casting on new stitches. I still didn’t get it… but can you recheck my opinion about your suggestion?
Seems like I did something that making the shaping side is wrong.
I have to rework my shaping side (which is I have to rework it again at 15th row)
When the last row for increases (Row 21: 3 stitches) is done, I should casting on 17 new stitches
I was just suggesting to check the colour work against the chart to ensure it is correct annyou are happy with it.
To me it looks like its go off a bit but i may be wrong. For instance the columns marked with red arrow should all be the same, the white stitch on the needle and the white column below (2 rows of white below the needle stitch) but on your increase stitches it looks like white on the needle and green below.
The parts circled in blue on the photo where the increases are made with white yarn, these dont follow the colour pattern and might be seen after the neck band is put on. If your neck band is white then it may not be noticable to have a bit of white peaking through, if your neckband is green (main colour) you might not be happy with the colourwork pattern peeping incorrectly from under the band.
Again wih the cast on of 17 sts. If your neckband will be white then white is good. If your neckband will be green then i suggest cast on with green.
The original cast on sts are the ones between the red lines (46sts). The increases are graduated to the left with the chart stitch numbers continued as the increases are made. The red arrow is the dirction of knitting.
It may be that making your own diagram will help you or even duplicating the chart and pasting multiple copies next to each other as ColoCro once suggested.
Ahhhh you are rightttt. I was making a something that is wrong. Thanks for making it clear
Umm, I was planning to make it in white, cause I’ve bought more white yarn than green. So is that okay if the increases made with white yarn?
And are my 17 stitches in the right way? I was a bit ambivalent for it
