Need help decreasing a brioche hat

I am hoping someone can explain exactly how i am suppose to decrease this hat.!
Could someone please explain the in parentheses?20190508_062253|900x1200

The pattern is the Novita Brioche hat, smallest size. I am so confused

For Dec rnd #1 (3sts + the yo in the middle) is describing the last 4sts on the needle.
(+ the yo) means to k2tog and include the yo so you’re really knitting together 3 loops that are over the needle, 2 knit sts and a yo.

For Dec rnd #2 (3sts + the yo of the last st) describes the last 4sts. It’s more a check that you’ve got the correct sts there at the end of the needle

For Dec rnd #3 (3sts + the yo of the first st) describes the last 4sts. (+the yo) like dec rnd #1 means to k2tog and include the yo so you’re really knitting together 3 loops that are over the needle.

I’ve tried this on the needles and it seems to work. You might try it out on a swatch before working all of the hat sts. It’s a somewhat confusing way to write the pattern but a very pretty hat.

So, 3 sts + the yo in the middle, is the same sts as the k2tog+ yo, slp1 yo? How is that the last 4 sts?
Thank you so much for helping me!

They are calling the 2sts for the k2tog, the yo and the slip one, the 4 sts. What they want you to knit together is 2 of the sts plus the yo.
It seems a little loose regarding the definition of a stitch but it seems to work.

Thank you so much! I was thinking the two different parentheses were different sts. Yes, I am already to that part in the pattern. I am new to brioche.
You are amazing! I don’t know how you know everything, but you sure help a lot of people!

Maybe the pattern is a translation? It isn’t so straightforward.

Thank you. I’m happy that someone can benefit from my mistakes!

Hi can anyone help me with the round 4 of the decrease? it seems to throw the brioche pattern out completely.

Welcome!
Check the previous row and make sure it looks correct. Can you post a photo of your knitting?

Unfortunately I don’t seem to be able to upload a photo.

Thank you for your prompt reply. My confusion is that row 4 of the decrease reads that you decrease all along the row:
Dec round 4: slip 1yo knit together the yo and the next stitch. Repeat - to end of round.
I read that you do this all along the row rather than the last 4 stiches on the needle. If I do that the next slip stitch is a yo then yo knit together next stitch with yo.

Does that make sense?

Decrease round 3 (colour 1): work to the last 4 sts on needle (3 sts + the yo of the first st), k2tog (+ the yo), slip 1 yo.

The marker is your beginning of round. Round 3 should have ended k2tog (+ the yo), slip 1 yo.
If the last stitch before the marker is the one indicated in red, then the problem may be with the previous round.

It looks like it’s ending with a k2tog (+the yo) instead of the slip 1 yo.

You may be able to correct this by starting Round 4 with a k2tog the stitch plus the yo. Try a couple of sts and see if this helps. It might help to go back and check round 3 to make sure all the sts alternate between the slip 1 yo and the k2tog, and that the pattern didn’t go off there.

You are right about the error in round 3 but I still don’t understand round 4.
It says to ‘slip 1yo, k tog yo and next stitch’ repeat to the end of round.
If I do I loose the brioche pattern.
I must be completely misreading the instruction but I am so confused.
Alternatively should the instruction be for the last 4 stiches of the needle as with rows 1-3? (Just a misprint)
I’m begining to think I will have to abandon this project!!

I’ll have to see if I can work a small swatch to make sure this works.
I just finished a brioche sweater with decreases myself.

I don’t have a good answer.
When I followed the pattern you quoted and I linked to I didn’t get a two-sided brioche in two colors. I changed to this pattern from Novita

which did give me the two-sided pattern but may have a mistake in the decrease rounds.

It might be best to contact Novita to sort out the final decrease round. It’s a pretty hat and it would be too bad to have to give up on it.

Thank you so much. I really appreciate all you have done and the time you have taken.
