Need a hat pattern

Hi!

My boyfriend would like me to knit him a beanie, but all the patterns I find have ribs or fancy decoration. He wants a simple, really plain beanie without color changes or ribbing, or even a brim. I’m a beginner and so I wouldn’t really know how to modify a pattern…

Help!

Thanks

Even if the pattern has stripes you can skip those. Can you knit in the round or do you want a pattern that is knit flat and has to be seamed?

I haven’t knitted in the round yet but I’m willing to try. If I skip the ribbing I’m afraid the gauge will change and I wouldn’t know how to modify it so I can get the right number of beginning stitches - or does it not matter at all?

Here’s a pretty basic one. it is knit in the round, it’s the yarn making the stripes so just use a solid color. There is about an inch of ribbing, but that does help with stretch.

If he really doesn’t want any ribbing, just start knitting w/out ribbing. Of course, if you just use stockinette, the bottom edge will roll, which I think is quite nice looking, but in my opinion kind of feminine so he may not like that afterall.

Gauge isn’t affect by the ribbing. The ribbing helps it stay snug over the ears. Stockinette with an edge also curls. If he doesn’t want ribbing even on the edge you may have to do a hem or something.

To knit in the round you’ll need to use a 16" needle and same size DPNs for the top, OR two circular needles, OR one long circular that you can use for magic loop. Knitting in the round is easy and there’s no pesky seams.

These have very little ribbing on the edge.

Tons more if you need them.

Thank you everyone! I looked at the beanie he wants me to copy and it looks somewhat like a double seed stitch - his hat is black though so I can’t really figure out the stitch exactly. I can’t use stockingette because it’ll curl, and he doesn’t want curling.

Thanks Jan for the basic formula! It’ll come in handy!

Oh wow, I just saw exactly what he has on Ravelry… but it’s crochet! So I’ll do something else until I start crocheting as well :stuck_out_tongue:

Here’s a couple seed stitch hats. They do have ribbing, but with seed stitch I don’t think you’ll need it.
