I’m hoping someone can help me. I am 5 months pregnant and am trying to use up yarn that I already have instead of buying yarn to match a specific pattern.
I am looking for an easy garter stitch baby sweater to knit up in organic cotton yarn (blue sky alpaca). I tried looking on their website and the one they had had buttons on it and was more like a cardigan to me.
Most baby sweaters are cardigans, it’s hard to get a pullover on a small wiggly baby. Lion’s website has lots of baby patterns, some in their cotton yarns. You want to try and match the yarn weight - worsted or sport or whatever - and find something that uses a similar size needle as your yarn. You can put ties on instead of buttons.
I’d also advise knitting at least a 6 month size, for most babies they’ll be able to wear that size at about 3-4 months. You’ll get tons of newborn sizes that the little will probably outgrow before he/she gets a chance to wear it more than once.
There are two easy baby patterns here, you can substitute organic cotton, if the gauge is the same, it should read 18st = 4 in on a size 8 needle. One is knit and the other crocheted. I think you will like the pink one, which could easily be worn by a boy too in a different color.
Here is a free on-line pattern that I knit once that was very easy. It is almost all garter stitch, with a band of something else for interest, but not hard at all. It buttons like a cardigan but you do self buttonholes as you go. It is a pattern that can be worked in any yarn you want. It works for a boy or a girl. It has minimum finishing.
Yes, I would prefer a sweater… and i’m silly - it could be stockinette or any combination of knit/purl stitches. Thanks ladies for great places to look and the links!!
