Neckline stitch

I’m knitting 2 large rectangles in stocking stitch (front and back), then seam to make 2 armholes plus shoulder seam. I’ve done a 2 x2 ribbing for the bottom of the top and was wanting to knit a neckline using another knitting stitch rather than the 2 x 2 ribbing. The neckline would be a boat neck shape. Any ideas on what type of stitch I could knit?

Lots of boat necks seem to have a deep 2x2 rib neck line which looks really nice, I think too increasing in the purl bumps to get a bit more length in the neck can help the boat shape be a little roomier on the neck (I love boat neck shape but sometimes I get uncomfortable if it digs into my neck at all so although i think the shape is elegant i also want a good fit).

I did one with brioche neck band which folded over to the outside. The back outside has a couple of little invisible stitches (I think one each side at the shoulder seam an one or two spaced on the back) to hold it down without looking sewn, the front fold doesn’t need any. The brioche is looser and bouncier than stockinette or rib so the neck is soft and open.

Adding a double neckband with a pattern stitch could be good if the top suited it.

Or a cable neck edge?

I do necks about 6 times before I’m happy with them. I’m probably not the person to offer any advice or suggestions! Ha!

Those are good choices. What about an i-cord edge? If you’re working in a thin yarn you can work around the neckband in one piece. If a thicker yarn, work the i-cord separately on each piece and seam.

You could try knitting the neckband in stocking stitch and finishing it with an iCord cast off which gives it a nice firm edge.

Sorry, just seen your reply - great minds think alike!!
