Neck on dog sweater help

I really feel discouraged. I have knit 2 dog
Sweaters. I follow the directions. The dog
Sweater comes out with no neck. I follow the
Directions for picking up and knitting stitches
To the marker joining in the round. What did I do
Wrong? I have thrown out two now:disappointed_relieved::disappointed_relieved::disappointed_relieved::disappointed_relieved:

Can you link to your pattern? A picture of the results would be helpful so we can see what you’ve done and how you’d like it to be different. Without know what pattern you’re working from or how it comes out wrong, it’s really hard to make any guesses about it.

Where do I post the picture

You can post a photo the same place you post a question or response. Jan has a link in her sig for help with posting them.

It’s from the book dog gone cute. The basic sweater

The red one. I can’t post picture it’s to large

Very cute sweater. Hold onto the ones that you’ve made. A mistake at the neck can probably be corrected.
Here’s a link to the Ravelry page for the sweater

I couldn’t find any errata for that particular sweater but here’s a link to another correction should you choose to knit that pattern (Bright Stripes).

Give us just the few lines about the neck and picking up sts for the collar (not the whole pattern). We run into copyright problems with the whole pattern.

Hi there! I made this one when I first started knitting. And the instructions gave me fits. I’m so sorry it’s been a discouraging pattern for you.

The sweaters starts at the neckline and is worked flat in rows and then seamed up the chest. Once its seamed only the body ribbing and leg ribbing is picked up and knit in the round.

HTH

With rs facing and circular needle pick up and knit 36 st.
Along body second marker back knit 26

Doesn’t sound like it. Been knitting for 20 years
I haven’t done this in so long I forgot

Seam the chest part of the sweater first. Sounds like these are directions for knitting a border or edging on the dog sweater. Here’s a video for picking up and knitting that may help.

Later you pick up and make the collar. Some of the projects on the Ravelry page may help if you need to see the finished sweater better.

I think I found out what I did. Where it says
Continue even work till after neck ribbing measures??
I think I was doing stockinette so I didn’t
Know where the neck is. Does this sound
Right???

Hi Gilmour,

I have that as the first instruction in the Body Ribbing section done after the rest of the sweater is knit and the chest front is sewn.

" with RS facing and circular needle, pick up and knit 36 sts along body from 2nd marker to back. K 26 from spare needle. Pick up and knit 36 sts along opposite side of body to 2nd marker. 98 sts. Join in round and work 1" in K1 P1 ribbing."

In your picture this is the ribbing under the dog, not at the neckline.

The neckline cast on is 39 sts worked flat for 1". Start in the left column of p.3 under Gauge Swatch using the sentence starting " With smaller needles cast on 39.

1st Row: (RS) K1. *P1. k 1. Rep from * to end of row."

This starts the collar ribbing.

See why I say the instructions gave me fits?

It’s possible.

Yes, I was thinking that if you don’t have a good idea of where the edges of the neck are, you might not leave that area open when you seam the chest. JPC has the directions and will be better able to help with these details but I think you’ve hit on the problem too.

I remembered asking a question on the forum about the leg openings. Thought I’d put a link to the thread here, to make it easier for us to find just in case we need it.

I am working on a sweater from the same pattern book. I am having issues at the same area ‘continue working until the neck ribbing measures……’ I guess I was thinking the ‘joining row’ where I casted on stitches after the leg openings is where I measure from?? Then it talks about placing a marker at the end of each row. I am using straight needles. I do not see instructions for the circular needle until the body ribbing is done. So my next question is there a pattern that is not so frustrating. I need for chest 27” and neck to tail 23”

Welcome to KH!
It’s apparently not a straightforward pattern and others have said how frustrating it is.
It sounds like you’ve made good progress so far. Is there a place where the pattern tells you to begin the neck ribbing? I assume the measurement of the ribbing is from the beginning of the rib unless the entire sweater is knit in rib. Can you measure this on the dog or against the dog to get an idea of how long the ribbing should be?

There are a few patterns on Ravelry that may work.

It sounds like you’re doing everything right up to a certain point, so let’s troubleshoot a bit. When picking up stitches for the neck, ensure you’re evenly distributing them around the collar area as indicated in your pattern. Sometimes, patterns require you to pick up stitches over a certain number of rows, so double-check that you’re picking up the recommended number. Additionally, confirm you’re joining in the round at the correct spot to start the circular knitting for the neck. You might find tutorial videos helpful for visual guidance, or consider checking with a local knitting group. Don’t be discouraged; each attempt is part of your learning!
