Hello,
Im a beginner knitter and im trying to knit my first cardigan.
Im stuck on the neck and shoulder shaping part of a pattern… the pattern says “bind off for shoulders at the beginning of next 4 rows (11 sts).remaining 21 stitches bind off for neck.”
What i don’t understand is that every where that I’ve seen they bind off the center neck stitches first and then shape the shoulders, and even if i bind off those stitches at the end, i still don’t understand how the shoulders will be made.Any help would be highly appreciated
Welcome to the forum!
Row 1 bind off 11sts then work to the end of the row and turn.
Row 2 bind off 11sts then work to the end of the row and turn.
Repeat rows 1 and 2 once more.
There’ll be 21 center sts left on the needle. Bind off the center sts.
You’ll end with a slope at each armhole edge and the center neck sts bound off.

I’ll just add that necks come in different styles. Some styles the neck is bound off, or stitches are put on hold, lower (earlier) than the shoulders - just as you have seen before. But not all necks are this way. Some the neck is higher, especially at the back as this helps the style of sweater to sit correctly on the shoulders.
Depending in the style you might also have a neck edge or neck band worked much higher than the shoulder all around. Shoulders can also be shaped differently with some being straight across and some being sloped to follow the body’s more natural slope - again it depends on the style.
I hope this helps.
