Hello all! I’m trying to knit my own lace wedding veil. I am fairly new at knitting but I’m not having trouble following the pattern I am using, which is a small circular table cloth pattern. My only problem is that the lace is too dense. I am using size 1 needles and tatting thread because I thought this would make the lace very fine and make it so that my face is not obscured by the design. Should I use bigger needles? Should I keep going and hope to block this lace into shape? Or should I try a different pattern? (the one I am using now http://www.yarnover.net/patterns/doilies/kunststrik/storrund.html)
Thank you so much for your help in advance

The size of the stitch is a factor of needle size and tension. The larger the needle the larger the loop/stitch.
I would try and go up a needle size or two for a more open look. This is one advantage of a test swatch, try the pattern using different needle sizes as part of the same swatch. Once you find the needle size you like go for it.
Yes, use a larger needle to make the fabric less dense.
I would do a sample swatch with different size needles. Once you get a fabric you like then use that size needle.
So cool! When you get done, make sure you post a picture.
Hi! :waving:
First, let me congratulate you on your decision to knit your wedding veil! That’s superb!!! And also offer you best wishes for a happy married life!
About the pattern you posted…I’ve done lots of crochet over the years and I can readily see that the pattern you’re working from is, indeed, very dense. I don’t think you’ll ever get the “fineness” you’d want for a wedding veil using this pattern.
However, there are some awesome shawl patterns around that would make a stunning wedding veil. Check out Ravelry if you’re a member or maybe some folks on here will have suggestions for a delicate, romantic shawl/veil.
Whatever your decision, best of luck with it. And please keep us posted on the project!
Happy Knitting, :knitting:

What size tatting thread areyou using. I ask because I have seen some fine examples of knitting done w/ 80 or 100 tatting thread and 0000 needles :passedout: But a size 5 Perl Cotton or size 20 thead may notbe as fine as you’d like…I tat some InTatters.com may have some info on what size you might try too…off hand though I’d say to try a 70 or 80 maybe
If the lace pattern is densely knit, then going up a needle size or 3 will make it more open, so that would be the way to go.
All my Armenian relatives tatted, the men as well as the women, as a cottage industry. InTatters.com does have some lovely items you might like to consider as veils, and you can always play with the density as you go.
Also (I talked to mom the tatter last night) a full size veil in 10 or 20 thread will probably be awful heavy. Mom suggested to look at a 40 or 70 and was leaning toward 70. What brand of thread are you using? I can give you suggestions on where to buy smaller if you want
I am currently doing stor rund dug in a laceweight wool, using size 6 needles. it’s coming along quite nicely!
