My right side and wrong side look the same?

So I’m a semi-beginner at knitting. I’ve watched tons of how-to’s and tutorials, and I know how to do the knit stitch and the purl stitch.

BUT…

This whole time, I’ve been doing something wrong. I recently learned that whatever you’re knitting should have a “right side” (smooth) and a “wrong side” (bumpy). But when I look at the things I’ve knitted, both sides are bumpy and neither side is smooth, like it has two wrong sides or something! This happens when I use the knit stitch AND purl stitch. No matter what yarn or needle size I use, it always turns out the same. Can someone tell me what I’m doing wrong?

I think it may have something to do with when I finish one row and begin the next. Maybe I’m flipping the work back and forth every time or something. But according to the tutorials, I’m doing everything right. I’d appreciate it if any of you could help. :frowning:

If you’re doing garter stitch it’s the same on both sides. Garter is knitting every row on both sides.

If you knit on one side then turn and purl on the other you’ll get stockinette stitch. Stockinette is smooth V’s on one side and bumpy on the other.

Go to the video section and click on the tips page. Then look at the “demo of a small project” and it’ll show you how to turn your work. See if you’re doing it right. If you are then review the videos on knitting and purling to make sure you’re doing them properly, too.

Ok, thanks! I’ll be sure to watch the videos, too.

You can also get garter stitch (bumps on both sides) by purling every row too. You have to do one row of all knits then a row of all purls and alternate them to get stockinette st which is smooth on one side and bumpy on the other.
