My knitted lace still curls!

I’m knitting lace scarves and even though there isn’t a purl anywhere, the scarves still curl up on the sides. Does anyone know why? Thanks! Heather Vail

What pattern are you using? Maybe you are knitting too tightly?

Some patterns that are knit on a bias will curl too.

Except I’m knitting everywhere, no purl. I’m knitting really loosely too - at least I think I am

You are purling every other row.
Row 1 and every odd numbered row: K2, purl to last 2 stitches, k2.

So you’re going to have some curling because it’s similar to stockinette even though it’s lace. Blocking may help some at the end.

No I’m sorry, I’m not purling anywhere. I’m purposely knitting where it says to purl to keep it from curling - and yet it still curls. I will see if I can post a picture. The ones I’ve taken were too large to post.

Oh, I didn’t realize that. It must be because of the lace pattern.

Lots of lace patterns look like…ah…well, they look pretty wild and/or awful in the hand while we’re working on them.

But after they’re blocked, ah! then they shine. Reading the instructions for this lace scarf (“wonderful spring scarf” etc.), I see that one is to knit until the scarf is 60 inches from the CO; it will block to 70 inches!

That’s quite a change. I’d say the curl you’re experiencing will be dealt with in the blocking, as long as you’re using a natural-fiber yarn. Are you? There are ways to make acrylic yarn behave, but I don’t think it can be made to stretch from 60 to 70 inches…
