My first Cardigan, I can't understand some of the pattern...

Hi everyone! I’m new to this forum, I found you because I’m knitting my first cardigan and the pattern is giving me headaches :frowning:

Here’s the link to the pattern: https://www.spotlightstores.com/projects/clothing-projects/northcote-cotton-mans-cardigan-project

I’m now working on the right front, and it says this:

Shape Front Slope and Collar - Keeping rib correct, 1st row - Rib 9, M2 (2 sts increased for collar), rib 2, rib 2tog (one st decreased for front slope), rib to end … 60 (64-72) sts.

Keeping rib correct, and working extra sts into rib, dec one st for front slope (as before) in every foll 4th row 5 times, AT SAME TIME inc 2 sts for Collar (as before) in foll 4th row once, then in every foll 6th row twice … 61 (65-73) sts.

When it says “as before” does this means that I have to rib 9 and then do the decrease? or do I have to do it at the beginning?

Then it says:

Dec one st at armhole edge in next row, then in every foll alt row 2 (4-6) times, AT SAME TIME dec one st (as before) for front slope in 3rd row, then in every foll 4th row 1 (1-4) time/s, then in every foll 6th row 9 (9-8) times, AT SAME TIME inc 2 sts (as before) for collar in next row, then in every foll 6th row 10 times … 65 (65-67) sts.

The armhole edge would be the beginning or the last stitches? and here it says “as before” again, do I have to rib 9 again before I make the decrease?

I think this pattern is very confusing :cold_sweat:

Please help me…

Welcome to KH!
“as before” refers to the placement of the front slope increase (rib 9, M2 or dec (rib2, rib2tog).
Since this is the right front (as you would wear the cardigan, the armhole decreases are at the end of the right side (RS) row, the same edge that has the bind off of 4(6-8) sts.
You’ll be working the front slope shaping and the armhole decreases at the same time so it may help to write out the row numbers with the front and armhole shaping noted for each row.

Thanks for your reply!

So if I’m understanding right, the rows would be like:

  1. 1st row
  2. rib 9, m2, rib 2, rib2tog, rib to end
  3. rib
  4. rib
  5. rib
  6. rib 9, m2, rib 2, rib2tog, rib to end
  7. rib
  8. rib
  9. rib 2, rib2tog, rib. to end
  10. rib
  11. rib 9, m2, rib to end

Thanks for your time :hugs:

Decrease for the front slope on row 1 (this is given in the pattern) and then on rows 5,9,13,17 and 21.
Increase for the collar on row 1 (this is given in the pattern) and then on rows 5,11 and 17.
