Hello everyone, long time no see. After a rough year last year I’m finally having some time and headspace to start knitting again properly. I tried to make the same jumper twice last year and failed both times. One far too small. The next attempt far too big. Anyway. I’m onto what is hopefully a more successful project but I need help. I’m making the Ceallaigh Sweater and I’ve reached the part of dividing the sleeves. The divide happens at the end of a stripe so I have to change colours and then cast on 8 stitched with the new colour. I’ve tried securing the new colour into the old for a few stitches but the cast on still feels very unstable and I feel like it’s going to cause me issues when I’m picking up stitches for the sleeves. Also, the BOR will be on the front of the jumper and I’d prefer it on the back. If I just slip the stitches to the middle of the back and start from there would that work? I hope that makes even a little bit of sense.
Thanks so much, hope you’re all well and looking forward to spending more time on here again!
It sounds like life is better for you and that’s good. If you’re using the new color for the next round you could slip your stitches to start in the back then work the cast on when you get there. That’s an amazing pattern.
Sometimes it’s nice to have the BOR be under the arm, so any discrepancies are more hidden. Especially when changing colors. Here’s a page with several techniques for jogless stripes:
Hello, nice to see you back.
Im not sure what you mean about the cast on not being secure for the sleeve pick up because i don’t usually work top down seamless, so its just not something i am really familiar with. But, just incase you habent come across it before, one tip for securig a new tail, where you want to be able to put some tension on it and not have it flap around, is to make a slip knot 4" up the tail, place the slip knot on your needle as though it is a stitch and tighten the slip knot. You then have tension for working. When you come back around to it just slip it off the needle, pull out the slip knot and weave the tail into the row below. If you dont want to weave it at this point for some reason then remove the slip knot from the needle but do not undo the slip knot, place a removable marker in it, tighten the knot and attach the marker to a stitch the row below so it doesnt flap about. You can weave it in later.
This might not be what you meant about it not feeling secure but i thought I’d share just in case.
Another method is to tie a knot with the new tail around the old yarn which is still attached, the knot will allow some tension but later on you can undo it to weave in without a knot there.
This is such a great tip for the slip knot. Thanks so much! I had to start the whole thing over because I didn’t like the fabric so this is going to come in very handy! Hope you’re doing well.
Underarm bor is my preference especially with color changes. I thought the OP wanted to stick with the pattern so gave my idea for resolving the issue.
I’m not sure what kind of cast on the pattern guve for the underarm but if it’s an eloop (i think that’s the term, or backwards loop , i may have the name wrong) which isn’t a stable cast on you could change it for a knitted cast on which would feel better, more stable.
