Moss stitch vs Seed stitch-Are they the same?

I have heard this pattern being called both names.

RS-k,p repeat
WS-k,p repeat

Which charts out as:

kpkpkpkpkpkpk
pkpkpkpkpkpkp
kpkpkpkpkpkpk

Where k=knit stitches, p=purl stitches view from the right side

Is this a US vs UK thing? Or am I wrong on the names?

Yep, it’s a difference in UK/US terms. Here’s the explanation from a post on Ravelry:

UK seed stitch is a stockinette background with an occasional purl stitch
US seed stitch is alternating knits and purls across the row and up the columns [that’s like your example above]

UK moss stitch is the same as US seed stitch
US moss stitch is alternating knits and purls across the row for two rows, and then alternating purls and knits for two rows.

UK double moss stitch is the same as US moss stitch
US double moss stitch is two knits alternating with two purls across the row and up the columns

UK box stitch is the same as US double moss stitch

Okay, that is what I thought. But I wasn’t sure.

Thanks Sue.

So are you saying do k,p, on 2 rows then p,k for 2 rows? What is the k,p,k,p,k,p all the way across and the purl all the way back. What is that stitch called?

When you purl or knit all stitches on the other side, it’s usually called broken rib stitch.
If you do k p on 2 rows then p k on two rows it’s a US moss stitch, but in the UK it’s called a double moss stitch.

This is all very interesting - and confusing lol. I thought they were two different terms for the same thing, depending on where you live. As for double moss and double seed - never heard of those!
