More stitches than instructions- help sought from more experienced knitters.

k till 17 sts rem, PM, p2, k2, (p1, k1) 2 times, k2, p1, (p1, k1) 3 times.

This is the instruction on my pattern Bryant Vest but if I follow this I have stitches left that I don’t know what to do with. I don’t think I have instructions for 17 stitches! Would be grateful for help.

Welcome!
That is 17sts:

p2,k2,- 4sts
(p1k1)x2, - 4sts
k2.p1 -3sts
(p1,k1)x3 -6sts
for a total of 17sts.

Remember that the all the directions within the parentheses are repeated for the given number of times.

Thanks very much, but I thought (p1,k1) meant knitting one stitch into two?

The ‘p’ is for purl 1 and the 'k’is for knit 1, if they want you to knit stitches together they normally say something like ‘k2tog’ or knit 2 together

Thanks- yes- I get it now. I had googled stitches in brackets and came to a more complicated conclusion but thanks for your help in putting me straight.
