Modular Knitting help - how to start a new shape

Hello everyone! I’m new to the forums and am having a lot of trouble on something that probably has a very simple solution, and I’m coming to you for help.

I’m making the LionBrand Yin Yang scarf (here, but you have to register to use it) and it uses modular knitting. Thinking that it would be a breeze to learn, I started it and now I’m stuck.

I’ve done the first right triangle, and now I have no idea what stitches to cast on or pick up to start the first equilateral triangle. Any help would be very much appreciated.

(I just realized that I can’t post the whole pattern, so I just did the first two steps, I hope this is alright)

SCARF
Cast on 18 sts.
Right Triangle
Row 1: K1, inc 1, k1, turn.
Row 2: Sl 1, k to end.
Note: Move yarn behind the work before you sl 1, k to end. This will ensure a neat edge.
Row 3: K1, inc 1, k3, turn.
Row 4: Place marker, sl 1, k to end.
Row 5: K1, inc 1, k to marker, remove marker, k1, turn.
Row 6: Place marker, sl 1, k to end.
Rep Rows 5 and 6 until all cast-on sts have been worked – 34 sts.
Last Row: K1, inc 1, k to end – 35 sts.
The first Equilateral Triangle will begin at lower point of the Right Triangle.
Equilateral Triangle
Row 1: K1, inc 1, k2tog, turn.
Row 2: Sl 1, k to end.
Row 3: K1, inc 1, k1, k2tog, turn.
Row 4: Sl 1, place marker, k to end.
Row 5: K1, inc 1, k to marker, remove marker, k2tog, turn.
Rep Rows 4 and 5 until you have worked all but last 2 sts.
Next Row: Sl 1, k to end.
Last Row: K1, inc 1, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1.

Thank you!

In this pattern you are not really casting on or picking up stitches. What you are doing is creating each triangle with short rows. If you follow the directions, the triangle will take shape.

You increase stitches with your short rows k2tog to attach the new triangle to the one before it.

Trust the pattern, after a few rows you will see how the triangle takes shape. Just know your scarf will look wonky till you get to the end cause you will be working on an angle as you create the triangles.

Thank you! I figured it’d be simple!
